CG detectives arrest pair for home break-in

By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Coral Gables police have arrested two burglars who allegedly broke into the home of Nancy Cooper at 739 Blue Rd., Tuesday, April 27. After locating a female suspect and the car allegedly used in the robbery, Detectives Glenn Arp and Charles Richards began tailing the woman. On Thursday, April 29, the detectives followed the car to two Miami Springs homes and caught the woman and a male companion as they were preparing to break into the second house. Arrested were 20-year-old Susan Helton, of 320 NE 26th St., and 27-year-old Joseph A. Tirado, of 411 NW 104th Terr. The pair gave police the name of the third man who allegedly assisted them in the Coral Gables burglary, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. He is 24-year-old William Ravis, of 3631 NW 24th Ave. Detective Arp said that he and Detective Richards followed Ms. Helton and Tirado to a house at 400 DeSoto in Miami Springs. While the couple was inside the house, the detectives found an index card on the suspects' car seat listing addresses of homes they may have been planning to rob. The DeSoto address was first on the list. When the pair left the first house, Arp and Richards discovered that the couple had broken in but had apparently been frightened away without taking anything. After following the suspects to the second house, the detectives arrested them. Both Ms. Helton and Tirado were booked on charges of attempted breaking and entering and breaking and entering. Police said Ms. Helton has no previous criminal record, but Tirado, who reportedly has a $200-a-day cocaine habit, also has an extensive drug-arrest background. Of the $500 worth of jewelry stolen from Ms. Cooper's Gables home, police said they have recovered only one piece of silver. Detectives are still looking for the rest of the booty, but they believe it has already been sold and melted down. Three Coral Gables sanitation workers who witnessed the Gables robbery tried, unsuccessfully, to chase down the thieves.

Gables worker cites police brutality on part of South Miami officers

From Page 1 anything can happen." Chief Vizzini, however, said Bryant came on the scene after police had tried to question the youth, to no avail, and they arrested the juvenile when he refused to give any identification. "Unfortunately, Bryant doesn't know what he's talking about... he's more interested in causing trouble than anything else," said the police chief. "The 16-year-old cursed the officers and refused to give identification. He struggled and had to be subdued." "All Bryant saw was four whites struggling with one black. Why he's determined to have this thing tried in the newspapers and not in court, I don't know. But, I will not stand for my police officers being unjustly accused." Vizzini said police are questioning several youths about the murder of the elderly South Miami woman and that the juvenile Bryant saw arrested is a suspect. The youth, however, was arrested on charges of obstructing police officers and resisting arrest without violence. He has since been turned over to his mother, Vizzini said. "This boy has six or seven previous charges with juvenile authorities which would be felonies if he were an adult," said the chief. "Among them are armed robbery, burglary and two counts of lewd, lascivious assault on a child," Vizzini said. "Bryant would do better to follow the example of a grocery store owner who, during the struggle between the police and the youth, came out and told the boy to settle down for his own good. "What I don't understand is why no one's come forward and yelled about the innocent old woman who was suffocated," Vizzini stated.
