New library being built in S. Dade

The official ground breaking ceremony for South Dade's new $1.8 million library will be held Friday, May 7 at 2:30 p.m. The new regional library, to be located on the site of the South Dade Government Center, next to the South Dade district police station at Cutler Ridge will replace the present library housed in the Cutler Ridge Shopping Center. Ground was actually broken April 19, although this week's ceremony, sponsored by the South Dade Chamber of Commerce and the Library Advisory Board will make it official. The new facility, funded through Decade of Progress Bonds approved by voters in 1972, will be two stories high and have 50,000 feet of available space. The South Dade Regional Library will contain about 100,000 volumes, as compared to the 25,000 volumes available at the present location, according to Ed Sintz, director of Dade County Libraries. As a full service library, the facility will have special children and adult sections, as well as a large collection of newspapers and magazines. In addition, a large multi-purpose room will be the setting for special community activities, such as films and exhibits. Audio-visual and microfilm services will also be available at the facility. A Bookmobile, which will travel throughout the South Dade community, will be stationed at the new South Dade library. According to Sintz, actual construction of the library will take about a year, although he said it will take approximately 18 months before the library is operational. "It will take a couple of months to move all the furniture and equipment into the library once construction is completed," said Sintz. "We will probably be ready to open by September of 1977," he said. The building, which will cost about $1.3 million to build, will contain $500,000 worth of equipment and furniture, according to Sintz. Approximately 65 residents will be employed at the new facility once it opens.
