S. Dade Cub Scout wins special emblem
Eric Petersen, 9, of SW 198th St., is the first Cub Scout in the South Florida Council to win the Agnus Dei Emblem. Eric, a fourth grader at Whispering Pines Elementary, is the son of Edward and Doris Petersen. His dad, a former Scoutmaster and his mom, a den mother, have long been active in South Dade scouting. Mrs. Petersen explained that Cub Scouting, nationally, has major emblems scouts can earn by studying their individual religions. Eric, a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 8601 SW 199th St., studied his religion and will receive his emblem Sunday, May 16 from his pastor Rev. Donald J. Blake at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. To earn the award Eric had to develop morning and evening prayers daily for three months, learn the church's structure and calendar, learn the meanings of symbols and colors used in Lutheran services, visit a shut-in and discuss all these experiences with his pastor. The award also required a visit to a house of worship of another faith. Mrs. Petersen said friends invited Eric and his parents to services at Temple Beth Am, 5950 N. Kendall Dr., and Eric wrote a report about the visit and discussed it with Pastor Blake.
CG Scouts bear flags
Coral Gables Boy Scout Troop 7 paraded the nation's historic flags before Secretary of Labor W. J. Ussery, at the National Air Lines Management Club dinner Tuesday, April 27. Scoutmaster Joe Crownover, who works in the city's print shop, said Troop 7's Senior Patrol Leader, Eagle Scout Michael Dixon gave a short history of each flag as the scouts carried the ensigns past the head table where Ussery sat with most of National Airlines top management officials. Assistant Scoutmasters Levi Lincoln and Tom Dixon lead the flag ceremony at the Marriott Hotel on LeJeune. Scouts participating were: Greg Bennett, Eddie De La Hoz, Mike Kranz, Miguel Garrido, Robert Munne, Martin Bennett, Danny Lincoln, Scott Johnson, Perry Lewis, Wayne Cappe, Gilbert Gonzalez, Jose Martinez and Brian Rankin.
