New radio frequency for police
Coral Gables Police radios have a big asset — a wide frequency band — and a detriment — on a clear night they pick up broadcasts from the University of Tampa. A grant from the Federal Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) of $47,149 combined with state and city money, will cure the detriment and change the asset, under the title "Operation Dispatch." The grant will be used, according to Gables Police Capt. R. J. Beckerich, to set up a wide Dade County frequency on the Gables' current channel by switching the Gables to a comparable band. It will also provide multi-channel communications for Gables police and a "tone squelch" capacity to tune out the sounds from Tampa. "The frequency realignment is spread over four counties," Beckerich explained. "Dade wants our frequency and we are waiting for the state to find a different one that will work just as well for us." The delay in the state's assignment of the Gables' new frequency is temporarily holding up the program, but Beckerich expects it to clear shortly. "The frequency change will mean a new crystal for every radio," the Captain said. "We will order the equipment and our own technicians will install it." Some of the fringe benefits of the change, along with tuning out Tampa, are two additional radio channels. Some older Gables police radios will be discarded for new ones because they would cost more to modify than they would to replace. Along with the current Gables police department channel, the new system will provide a direct linkup to police information and a tactical frequency for use when several Dade departments are teamed up on one emergency. The LEAA grant, Beckerich said, will cover 72.39 per cent of the radio changes. Florida will pay 4.02 per cent and Coral Gables has already approved a $15,367 (23.59 per cent) expense for the city's share.

Their study of sharks led to model creation
Three students at Gables Academy — inspired by their recent studies of sharks — decided to make their own shark replica. Terry Gerber, 13, Scott Simpson, 13 and Doug Buehler, 14, spent a month making a 10-foot hammerhead. They made the monster from wire screening, newspapers, electrical wire and six cans of black and white paint. "They even insisted on papier mache-ing it, but I knew it wouldn't work," said teacher Sue Durkee. "Sure enough, it cracked and fell apart. But they had the patience to take knives and get it all off and start over." Sue said that for two months the boys, who are in her reading disabilities class, have been researching sharks. "We did a complete study of sharks and shark attacks. The boys read 'Jaws' and 'Shark Attacks on Man,' and as a culmination of their work, decided to make the shark." A trip to Planet Ocean on Key Biscayne was another bonus for the boys' deligence. "We try to incorporate high-interest subjects in their reading curriculum — very structured studies which will help their reading skills," Sue added.
