IF wants no ands, buts; just former volunteers
In Mark Buchbinder's opinion, old idealists never die, they just get distracted. Now, Mark, a Kendall area attorney and a SW 118th Street resident, is forming the local chapter of the International Foundation. (IF) a group for former VISTA or Peace Corps volunteers. The goal of IF is to re-harness the ideals and experiences volunteers brought to the Peace Corps or to VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America) for local community activities. The South Florida IF steering committee - Mark, and Kendall residents John and Nancy Adams and Dave and Diane Lithuania - is holding an organizational get-together on Friday, May 14 at 8 p.m. in the Rathskellar at Florida International University (SW 207th Avenue off SW Eight Street.) The membership of IF is not limited to VISTA and Peace Corps ex-volunteers, but IF leadership is. As Mark explained, "We want anyone who is interested, but there is a direct appeal to volunteers. IF allows them to use their ideals again in a constructive way." Mark was a VISTA volunteer in 1968-69 in rural Marfa, Texas, where he taught sterile and he remembers it "as a very unique experience. I never realized until I became involved with IF the number of different people in different types of roles in VISTA and Peace Corps. "These are all people, whether they were in the hinterlands starting from scratch or teaching at a university, who lost and still have basic good instincts," Mark said. Mark Buchbinder ... IF leader IF will serve three purposes for these varied and scattered former volunteers, he explained. "It is a social outlet for them to meet each other, an employment service on a nation-wide basis and a skills bank for volunteer work in this community. Mark estimates that there are 2,000 former VISTA or Peace Corps volunteers living in South Florida, but doesn't have regional breakdowns. He's hoping for a big turnout because, "this is a non-profit, full time organization in other cities and could be here. "If we get response, we'll seek a grant for a full time coordinator. Then we can find out where we are needed and we can rechannel our skills and experience and ideals.

Mrs. Vickie Harold Answer: It is not very involved it doesn't require rewiring your entire house as most think. We can convert in the same box area presently used and would not disturb your wall decor unless you have covered the panel door. Question: To Mr. Don Smith of Patio Extension Services With the South Florida Weather and Termite conditions, how can I use wood to deck my patio? Bernie Law Answer: Wood can be used if it is treated in the factory to withstand weather and termites. Primarily use pressure-treated pine or redwood; both of these weather well and resist termites. Creosote-treated wood may also be used, but docks near ponds, etc., must not be creosoted or damage to water and fish may occur. PATIO OVERGROWN?
