CG lawyer indicted for claims fraud

A 36-year-old Coral Gables attorney surrendered to U.S. marshalls on a federal warrant charging him with obstructing justice in a major probe into suspected insurance fraud activity in Dade and Broward counties. Police said that James H. Davis II, who lives at 89 Leucadendra Dr. in Coral Gables was ordered by U.S. Southern District Magistrate Charlene Sorrentino held on $50,000 bail. Two of Davis' associates, Irving E. Curtiss, 49, of northwest Miami and William H. Holton, 50, also of Miami, are already in custody after being arrested on the same warrant. The two-year long investigation is being conducted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcia Lyons with the help of special agents of the Insurance Crime Prevention Institute (ICPI), an industry-funded investigative group. The ICPI sleuths, Postal Inspectors and Metro PSD officials have been looking into allegations of ambulance chasing and no -fault claims inflation practices in the Miami area, where the cost of automobile insurance has risen by as much as 42 per cent. Florida Bar assistant executive director Dick McFarlin recently told the Florida Insurance Task Force that the federal grand jury was nearly ready to deliver indictments against suspected claims offenders.
