DOAs are a sad part of fire rescue work
The Coral Gables Fire Rescue squad had two patients who were dead on arrival at local hospitals Sunday, May 16. Asked if death bothered him, one rescue team member said his experiences in Vietnam had accustomed him to dealing with fatalities. "It still hurts when it's a little kid," he said. "But other than that, you do your job and then try to think about something else." SUNDAY, MAY 16 12:48 p.m. — A. L. Lorentzson's 1970 Maverick was leaking gasoline at 1444 Medavia. An engine's crew drained 15 gallons of gasoline from the car. 2:49 p.m. — Fred Safa, 29 of 11820 SW 181st Terr., struck his head in a car accident at Ponce de Leon and Douglas. He was examined by a rescue crew and taken to Coral Gables Hospital. 5:05 p.m. — William Tansey, 75, of 336 Minorca was dead on arrival at Coral Gables Hospital. 5:17 p.m. — Julie Petrecca, 69, of 114 Antilla, was dead when rescue arrived at her home. SATURDAY, MAY 15 1:24 a.m. — Mary Council, 30, of 230 Freeman, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital by rescue responding to a report that she had chest pains and high fever. 3:30 a.m. — Carl Drichton, 84, of 524 Giralda, was taken to Doctors Hospital with an undetermined illness. 6:44 a.m. — J. F. Stordivant, 85, fell at his home at 829 Palermo. Rescue examined him for injuries. 1:52 p.m. — Mike Gerder of 225 Alesio was hit by a car at 4667 Ponce de Leon. Rescue examined him and released him in his own care. 3:30 p.m. — Samie and Wayne Gieib weretaken to Coral Gables Hospital for observation after being involved in a car accident at the corner of Malaga and Salzedo. 3:57 p.m. — Bill Roberts, 60, of West Palm Beach, was taken to a local hospital after being found ill at the Coral Gables Bus Terminal. 6:39 p.m. — Elizabeth Wilson, 16, of 500 Villabella was examined by rescue after being reported as ill. FRIDAY, MAY 14 3:05 a.m. — Frank Wyckoff, 22, of 3690 SW 14th St., was taken to Coral Gables Hospital after being treated by rescue for head injuries received when, he said, two men assaulted him near Sambo's restaurant on Miracle Mile. 3:53 p.m. — Lenora Hemp, 74, of 3362 SW 23rd St., was taken to Coral Gables Hospital after reporting pain in her back and ribs after a car accident at Ponce de Leon and Almeria. 4:04 p.m. — Merrell Seigrist, 62, of 170 Eastern Shores, Miami Beach, was taken to Doctors Hospital for treatment of a possible dislocated knee after falling near 1235 Mariposa. 6:22 p.m. — Daniel Carey, 57, of 1415 Robbia, was taken to Doctors Hospital by rescue after they treated him for cuts on his nose and chin received in a fall. 7:00 p.m. — Louis Adams, 41, of Richmond Heights, was examined and released in his own custody, after falling off his bicycle in the 1200 block of U.S. 1.
