Current laws prohibit camper parking
From Page 1 Ponce de Leon, presented a proposed ordinance for the board's study that would allow recreational vehicles to be parked to the side or back of homes on private property. He quoted a letter he received from City Attorney Charlie Spooner, whom he wrote for an interpretation of the ordinance. Spooner stated, "I recognize that many own these vehicles and find them beautiful. In my opinion, these vehicles compare to cheap signs and, in a single family community, they should not be seen." Thompson said other points in Spooner's letter had led him to believe that, "it is the contents that make these vehicles illegal. A VW van is legal; conversion to a camper makes it illegal." Caroll Blodgett, chairman of the Dade County Council of Campers, cited the inconvenience of having to park the vehicles far from home, even while loading or unloading for a vacation trip. Len Holloway, of Bayamo Avenue, called the ordinance "obviously outdated." He called for applying the current boat parking ordinance to recreational vehicles. Dr. Richard Sena of Coral Gables agreed. "We don't want to see any honky tonk here, but I'd rather see kids playing in a camper than out on pot. The family that plays together, stays together." Another Bayamo resident, Donald Albion, said the Realtor who sold him his Coral Gables home promised he could keep his camper there. He asked for a provision to make Realtors tell buyers about the ordinance and also cited "the joy of having all four of my kids, from age 12 to 25, with me in the camper instead of scattered." Dave Levichi of 1321 Sevilla said he keeps his mobile home in Allapattah, bringing it to his home only for loading and repairs. "Usually the police come by and just ask how long it will be there," he said. "But one night it was parked outside the house about 7 p.m. and at 9 a.m. the next morning the police were at the door telling my wife it had to be moved by noon. "I suggest a permit to own a recreational vehicle and to bring it in temporarily. Under this law you aren't even allowed to get out of the driver's seat. You can't even park it." Mike Whetstone, 1521 Garcia, said the provision in the ordinance allowing recreational vehicles to be stored in closed garages would "make the tail wag the dog in a house. The garage would be so great in size, the house would look small. And if you put a lot of campers in community parking, you give someone a beautiful chance to rip off C.B. radios and other equipment." Roger Gatland, 3618 Anderson, called for permits for temporary parking in a home driveway and agreed with the ordinance that, "We are opposed to parking recreational vehicles on city parkways."
