all about people Coral Gables grad garners top college freshman award
Laurie Anne Adams, a student at Coral Gables High School, has won a $2,000 annual renewable Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship to Birmingham-Southern College, Birmingham, Ala. Laurie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Adams, 6447 SW 14th St. This is the top honor an entering freshman can receive.
Red-Bird officers
The Red Bird Shopping Center Merchants' Association held its election of officers Thursday, May 13. New officers are: president, B. J. Trussel, Belk's assistant manager; vice-president, R. Clark, Bible Center's owner; recording secretary, Sam Katz, owner of Rae's Toys; secretary/treasurer, Mrs. M. Webb, Belk's office manager.
Wins her wings
Dawn P. King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis C. King, 1019 Mariposa Ave., Coral Gables, has graduated at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., from the Air Training Command's basic course for electronics specialists. A 1975 graduate of Coral Gables High School, she has received instruction in communications and electronics systems principles. She plans to remain at Keesler for advanced training.
Super achiever
Edward F. Callahan, 5430 SW 92nd Ave., has received the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company's "Superior Achievement Award" for 1975. As manager of the Coral Gables-based Miami claims office, Callahan was recognized for his outstanding performance in all phases of claim operations. Callahan, a graduate of St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia, came to Coral Gables in 1954 and has been managing the Miami claims office since 1961. E. F. Callahan
Poster winner
Cindy Simmons, of Coral Gables, has had her poster selected as one of the final entries in a national poster contest sponsored by Baskin Robbins. A student at Coral Gables High School, Cindy was among 15,000 who entered the contest from across the country. The last judging event will take place in Los Angeles, Calif., in June. Armando N. Codina, 7521 SW 176th St., has been elected to the board of directors of the Pan American Bank of West Dade. Codina is president of Professional Automated Services, Inc., a medical management information system serving physicians. Armando Codina
Blue yonder
Michael S. Davey, son of Mrs. Mary S. Davey, 16780 SW 81st Ave., has been assigned to Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks of training at Lackland Air Force Base, Tex., Michael studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. He will now receive specialized training in the missile maintenance field. Airman Davey attended Palmetto High School.
Wometco pair
Van Meyers and Richard F. Wolfson both of Coral Gables, have been promoted in Wometco Enterprises, Inc. Meyers has been elected senior vice-president in charge of vending, food services and bottling for Wometco. He joined Wometco in 1946 as manager of concessions and was elected to the board of directors in 1961. Wolfson has been elected chairman of the executive committee of the board of directors. He also retains his responsibilities as executive vice-president and general consel of the corporation. Wolfson joined the firm in 1952. Meyers and his wife, Jane, reside in Coral Gables. Patricia Collier Pollard, 5919 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, has received a master of education degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Louisville, Ky. Commencement exercises were May 9.
League officers
The League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Dade County recently elected officers for the year 1976-1977. They are: Wilma Felder, president; Orrie Strubinger, vice-president; Judy Seidner, secretary; Mary Jones, treasurer.
FAU grad
William S. Nowak, of Coral Gables, has received a B.B.A. degree in Business and Public Administration from Florida Atlantic University.
