House approves city's $50,000 bus tag claim

Coral Gables may soon receive $50,000 from the state of Florida as repayment for excess charges on city bus license plates from 1968 to 1971. Rep. Tom Gallagher sponsored a bill supporting the city's claim and the House of Representative has already approved the bill. It is now before the Senate, under the stewardship of Sen. Dick Renick.

Planning board James Peck was elected 1976-1977 chairmen of the Coral Gables Planning at its meeting Monday, May 17. Board member Charles George was elected vice chairman. The board also set a special public hearing for June 3 to consider a request from the consul general of Spain, Jose de la Guardia, to purchase 3600 Granada as his residence and consulate office. The 7:30 p.m. hearing will cost the consul general $300 in special fees, charged when a hearing is called by request of a petitioning individual. Guardia said it was necessary to have the hearing as soon as possible to maintain his option to purchase the property. International Ball Tickets are now available to the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce 10th annual International Ball. This year's edition, sponsored by the Committee of 21, will honor Florida Governor Reubin Askew on Friday, May 21 at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Tickets are $25 each and can be obtained at the Chamber office, 50 Aragon Ave. or by calling 446-1657. Stop smoking A Stop Smoking clinic begins Monday, June 8 at Coral Gables Hospital on Douglas Road. Those interested must register in advance because class size will be limited. To sign up, call the American Cancer Society at 377-8832.
