18 local schools win reading project honors

A South Dade and a South Miami school were among the three top winners in the Dade School System's Read on America program. Bel-Aire Elementary, 10205 SW 194th St., and South Miami Senior High School, 6856 SW 53rd St., were selected from among the 18 area winners and will each receive a $1,000 award to be presented by the School Board at its June 2 meeting. Each of the other schools selected as area winners - including Leewood Elementary School, 10343 SW 124th St., Riviera Junior High School, 10301 SW 48th St., and Coral Park Adult Education Center in the Southwest and South Dade areas alone - will each receive a $250 prize. All funds must be used for campus improvement projects. Thousands of Dade school children literally have read thousands of books on America this year and have recorded their readings in a variety of ways from pinning paper replicas of covered wagons next to their names for each book read, to sewing a star on a handmade flag for every 20 books read. An almost endless array of incentives were devised by students and staff members as they participated in the community-wide program designed to get students to do more reading, but also to select their reading material on themes related to the Bicentennial. The Read on America project was a voluntary one in which more than 80 per cent of the system's 241 schools and centers participated. Schools were required to design programs not only to motivate students to read more but to implement them as well. Students this year dressed as books, talked about books, heard tape recordings made by prominent local people talking about their favorite books, and set up book displays. They checked books out of libraries, from traveling cart mobiles and from special Bicentennial book corners. School officials report Read on America was one of the most successful programs in the school system's recent history. If a book was written about America - it is safe to say that it was read and reported one by some student in some school somewhere in Dade.
