Honors received by underclassmen

Academic honors were bestowed on many Christopher Columbus underclassmen. last Thursday night. Victor Panito received the gold medal of excellence in the class of '77; Pedro Lopez received it for his class of '78; and Paul Carey for the class of '79. Silver medals were awarded to Raymond Foster ('77), Richard Norton ('78), and Jorge Dorta-Duque ('79). Bronze medals were given to eight Juniors, eight Sophomores and 10 Freshmen. John Harrison and Thomas McElliott were guest speakers at the ceremonies. Brother Eugene also initiated 27 new members into the National Honor Society. Those Juniors joined the 24 Seniors who are already members. At the Block "C" dinner held at the Miami Springs Villas on May 5, this year's Scholar Athlete Award went to Tom DeSisto. The Sportsmanship Athlete Award was given to Louis Pagley. John Bow received the Athlete of the Year Award for 1975-'76. The track banquet was held in the Columbus cafeteria last Wednesday evening to honor the outstanding athletes in track and field competition. The Outstanding Freshman Award was won by John Cull for setting three Fresh man records in the mile, 880, and two mile. For his Sophomore record in the high jump, Carlos Gispert received the Outstanding Sophomore award. The Most Improved Performer was Byron Blaskovich. The Consistent Performer award went to Brian Quigley, and the Clutch Performer award was given to Tony Schallise. The top-scoring track athlete, Bill Leanou, was honored for accumulating 180 points during the season with his outstanding performances in the mile, 880, and two mile, including setting new records. The 80 Seniors who went to Disney World for Gradnite celebrated until 5 a.m., returning wearily to Columbus after spending Saturday night there. Adventures, attractions and popular celebrity entertainers kept them busy until Sunday's dawn. The "biggest and best" issue of the LOG, Columbus' newspaper, will be distributed Thursday. Among the special features in the 12 page paper are the Senior Last Wills and Testaments, the Sports Round-up section, and an autograph page. This is the last week for regular classes. Students are preparing for final exams' scheduled for May 24 through 28.

Prom King and Queen crowned at dance

By Pam Mandel Lori Notman was crowned Prom Queen and George Portela was crowned Prom King at last Saturday's Junior-Senior Prom. The dance was held at the Deauville Hotel and was well attended. The Cheerleaders for the 1976-77 school year have been chosen. On the Varsity squad, Julie Black, Janet Phipps (co-captains), Malanie Beard, Eileen Gallagher, Tracy Honkonen, Natalie Moore, Mary Dressel, Mary Faulkner, Rita Perez, Lynn Evans, Liz Davidson, Leslie Jefferson, Cathy Johnson and Dina Williams were picked. On the Junior Varsity squad: Silvie Chestaut, Cindy Ellen, Gina Falcon, Media Gas, Charlotte Lowe, Norma Menendez, Nancy Novak, Kim Patterson, and Lee Whittlesey were picked. In the Greater Miami Athletic Conference Badminton Championships, held last Friday, Sophomore Monica Schneider placed first in the Girls' number 1 singles. Ron [?Berli?] placed third in the [?number 2 Boys'?] singles, and [?Wm.?] Knox and Raul Ortega took third place in the number 2 Boys' doubles. Overall, Gables finished in second place. Mary Kirby represented Gables in the State track field championships held at Gainesville last Saturday. She placed first in the Shot Put,- with a throw of 42' 10 3/4" which is a state record. Coming attractions . . . The band will present a lunch time concert on the main patio Wednesday, May 19 . . . A representative from the "Quin In Israel" program will visit Gables Wednesday, May 26, at 11:30 a.m. Those interested should sign up in the Guidance Office.

Gables students awarded degrees

Three Coral Gables students were among 117 students awarded degrees in Belhaven College's (Miss.) 93rd commencement. President Howard Cleland, conferred degrees upon William O. Davies, Susan Fitton, and William E. Webb. Davies, the son of the Reverend and Mrs. Ray W. Davies, received the bachelor of arts degree with a major in Christian education and a minor in history. He was president of of the Student Activitites Organization, vice president of Collegiate Civitan and a member of the Student Government Association cabinet. The Reverend Davies delivered the invocation and benediction for the commencement ceremonies. Miss Fitton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Fitton, received the bachelor of science degree with a major in business administration and a minor in secretarial science. Webb received the bachelor of science degree in accounting with minors in business administration and history. He was a member of the student senate, Phi Beta Lambda, Omicron Delta honorary leadership fraternity, Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, Karate club and collegiate Civitan. Webb also participated in intramural athletics and was a member of the Belhaven varsity soccer team.
