Jazz benefit performance to aid UM band Europe trip
A benefit jazz performance by Joe Donato and Friends to raise money for the University of Miami's Jazz Band trip to the World Jazz Festival in Switzerland will be held at 8 p.m., Sunday, May 23, in Gusman Concert Hall on campus. Admission is $3. The 25-member band has played several benefits and has already raised $6,000 for the trip. More 'Calcutta' The Coconut Grove Playhouse has decided to hold over Oh! Calcutta, the nude sex-fantasy revue, through at least June 13. Meanwhile, a Cole Porter revue is on the boards at the Players Repertory Theater through the end of May and Sea Horse is slated for June. Music at FIU Florida International University's musicians have three concerts at University House on campus and one at South Miami's First United Methodist Church slated for the end of May. James Moore will give a voice recital on Tuesday, May 25, at 12:30 p.m. and Greg Lane follows that night at 8 p.m. with a viola recital, both in UH 140. Gloria Striggle presents a voice recital on Friday, May 28 at 8 p.m. in the same location and Susan Alonso follows on Saturday, May 29 at 8 p.m. with a piano recital at the Methodist Church. Student drama The University of Miami's Ring Theater kicks off its summer season of five American comedies with Damn Yankees, premiering May 26 at 8 p.m. It will run May 27 to 30 and June 7 to 5. This week, and for the next two weeks, FIU students will be producing a variety of plays at 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Admission is free and the selections run from Tennessee Williams to Woody Allen. The plays will be staged in FIU's old theater, Deuxieme Maison, room 150. Liberated Selfhood A presentation of black music and poetry by the FIU Afro-Americans launches the Sixth Minority Concerns Conference, entitled "Liberated Selfhood," from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22 in University House, room 210 on the FIU campus. Rychard Cook will read a selection of black poetry and guitarist Rosita Perez will entertain. The keynote speaker will be social worker Lucy Estrin talking about teacher effectiveness. For further information, call Carolyn Sarnoff at 552-2648. Poetry prizes More than $5,000 in cash prizes will be awarded in the Bicentennial Poetry Contest sponsored by the World Poetry newsletter. The grand prize will be $1,776. Poems of all styles and on any subject are eligible for the many prizes. Grove House Grove House, the non-profit guild of Florida artists and craftsmen based on Main Highway in Coconut Grove, will hold an auction of all arts and crafts at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 6. The auction preceeds Grove House's summer closing from June 30 to Sept 7. Proceeds will benefit Grove House. The gallery is also starting a new series of classes in clay, weaving, macrame, metal working, painting, drawing and sculpture on May 24. Call 445-5633 or 444-0659 for details. Children's theater The City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department in sponsoring two free performances of a play for children. Dandy Dan the Mustache Man will be presented at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 26 in Douglas Park, 2755 SW 37th Ave. and at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 9 at Coconut Grove Elementary School. Night music The Miami Church of Religious Science, 7800 Miller Rd., will present Joy Martone and Tony Simone, singing solo and duet on Sunday, May 23 at 8 p.m. The program includes opera and show tunes.
