Marine Private David T. Turman, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Turman, 6130 SW 46th Terr., has graduated from Basic Combat Engineer School at the Marine Corps Base in Camp Lejeune, N.C. David is a former student at South Miami High School who joined the Marine Corps in December, 1975. Other South Dade resident distinguishing themselves in the military include: Navy Seaman Benjamin C. Albury, a graduate of South Dade High School, who has completed recruit training at the Naval Training Center in Orlando. Albury's wife, Bambi, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stavrou of 20105 SW 264th St. Albury is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Albury of 22223 SW 124th Ave. Navy Seaman Recruit Kathi L. McCord, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCord of 19627 SW 301st St., who has completed recruit training at the Naval Center in Orlando. She is a 1974 graduate of South Dade High School. Students' notes Coral Gables and South Dade students are finishing college degrees and garnering academic honors from Georgia to Arkansas to Massachusetts. John T. Butler, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Butler of SW 28th St., has graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelors degree in industrial engineer. Butler graduate summa cum laude (with highest honors) and was a member of many campus organizations. A Coral Gables High School graduate, Butler will attend Harvard Law School next fall. Miss Susan Estelle Pullias, daughter of Dr., and Mrs. G.M. Pullias, Jr., 6340 San Vincente, is on the dean's list of top scholars at David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tenn. A graduate of Coral Gables High School, she made the list by earning straight "A's" in the spring quarter. Miss Sara Luanne Starling, daughter of Mrs. Jean S. Starling, 3700 S. Lake Dr. and a 1973 graduate of Southwest Miami High School, has made the dean's list at Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas. Miss Starling is a junior studying nursing. Three local residents have earned degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). They are: Karl J. Kaplan, 27955 SW 140th Ave. who earned a degree in chemical engineering. M.G. De Gasperi, the daughter of Professor and Mrs. Paul N. De Gasperi of 1435 Ancona Ave., who earned a bachelors of science degree in management and who received the Robert A. Boit Writing Prize, second place in poetry. Kenneth L. Harrenstien, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard P. Harrenstien of 618 Jeronimo Dr. who earned a bachelors of science in electrical engineer and computer science. New leatherneck Marine Private Donald L. Powell, son of Robert A. Powell, 1811 SW 83rd Ave., has completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. A former student of Southwest High School, he joined the Marine Corps in February, 1976. Top sailor Radioman First Class Petty Officer Charles E. Billings, a native of Coral Gables, has been selected as the Naval Air Force Pacific Fleet Sailor of the Year. He is currently serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. Grant recipient Domenic Macrina, 8100 SW 91st Ave., a University of Miami graduate student, has been named recipient of the annual Walter E. Heller Fellowship grant. Macrina received the grant of $1,650 to help pursue a master's degree in business administration. Paul who? Miami City Manager Paul W. Andrews, 5840SW 86th St., will be honored for his service to the city during a dinner at the Miami Sprins Villas for officials and former co-workers July 29. The evening is entitled "An Evening With Paul Who?" and tickets can be obtained by calling Ms. Tillman at 579-6040. Marlboro man David G. Ropes, former resident of Coral Gables, has been appointed assistant brand manager for Marlboro cigarettes at Philip Morris in New York. More military Marine Staff Sgt. John H. Hanner, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Hanner, 12010 SW 168th St., has reported for duty at the Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, Calif. He's a 1969 Killian High School graduate who joined the Marines in 1970. Marine Corporal Adam Wood, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy S. Wood, 512 Aragon Ave., has been promoted to his present rank while serving at the Marine Corps Base in 29 Palms, Calif. He's a 1972 Coral Gables High School graduate and joined the Marines in 1973. Navy Midshipman Second Class Daniel A. Acton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvina Acton, 10770 SW 90th Ave., has been named to the Dean's and Superintendent's Lists at the Naval Academy, for the 1975-1976 scholastic year.
