.... Coral Park grad got film role 'horsin' around'

By ERICA MEYER Staff Writer When a film producer in Israel offered Bruce Starin a part if the young actor could ride a horse and speak with a southern accent, Starin said he could do both. But, his horseboack riding experience was limited to ponies in a ring and his accent is South Dade, not South Carolina. He got the part anyway, but he was first carried "halfway to Haifa" by a runaway Arabian horse while trying to prove his equestrian expertise. Starin, 24, the son of Abe and Sylvia Starin of 2023 SW 99th Ave., has a practical approach to acting as a craft and to his role in the profession. A Coral Park High School graduate with a masters degree in drama from the University of Miami, Starin already has an impressive list of acting credits. He plays a southern Civil War army deserter in the Israeli-made "spaghetti-matza western," Vendetta with Lee Van Cleef and Jim Brown (which will probably appear in Dade County this fall). Bruce has played a doctor on the soap opera "All My Children," made television commercials, worked in dinner theater and filmed an episode of "Caribe." He's also lived on an Israeli kibbutz and worked as a lumberjack, using a tree-trimming attachment hooked to the turret of an Israeli army tank. After leaving Israel, Bruce traveled for a couple of months and came home, to South Dade, three weeks ago. In another month, he plans to go to California — in the actor's perpetual search for a screen role. "I want to follow through with film," he said. "Theater, I'm afraid, is getting to be like opera. But with movies, everyone goes. You don't have to be rich." Asked if he missed direct audience interaction when he's doing film instead of theater, Starin remembered the drunk in a dinner theater who threw up on his foot and the hours of standing in "joy-dit" lines, where people passed, shook his hand and said "enjoy it" after a theater performance. Starin said he hopes theater can find a way to become more open to the public and said many of his dinner theater audience members have told him they had never seen live theater before. Meanwhile, he said, the professional camera, lighting and stage crew personnel on a film set provide a knowledgeable and sympathetic audience. "There is a reality, a scope in film you can't get in theater," Starin said, "But you do sacrifice an audience rapport and you have to be careful not to get too full of yourself. "Regardless of how artistic an actor or director or producer wants to make a movie," Starin said, "it's still basically entertainment. "You have to have a grasp of comparative magnitude," Starin said (adding that he quoted the phrase from a UM drama professor). "Acting is more of a craft, a trade, then an art. It's as much of a skilled trade as being a carpenter, lawyer, doctor or plumber." Though Starin's current plans point to California and a pursuit of film roles, he plans to come home to South Dade often. Bruce Starin ... a craft
