SM faces higher taxes, increased garbage fees

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer In addition to higher taxes in the coming budget year, City of South Miamians probably will have to pay some 42 per cent more in sanitation fees to have their garbage and refuse hauled away by the city. When the city's lawmakers convene July 20 for their first regular session since June 9, one of their first acts will be to consider an ordinance affecting every single family home and apartment in the city which will increase the sanitation fees. For twice-a-week pickups if the ordinance is passed, South Miami sanitation bills for owners of single family homes will go from $42 to $60 and from $55 to $78 for occupants of garage apartments, duplexes and apartment units. The council July 20, probably will pass the ordinance on first reading and set a date for a public hearing in August immediately prior to passage of the bill. Even if the city's sanitation fee is raised the 42 per cent, the city's administration points out that the fee still will be less than that charged yearly by Coral Gables or Dade County. Coral Gables presently charges $66 a year for two cans twice a week and Metro, $72 for the same service. The yearly increase in South Miami, if the council passes the ordinance, will bring in some $94,000 in revenue more than was placed in the new budget as presented by City Manager Jack Present to the council in June. The sanitation fee increase is one of several means of keeping South Miamians from having to swallow the paying of twice as much in property taxes in the coming budget. The council, meeting with City Manager Present and Finance Director Charles Stamm last Tuesday in its second budget slashing session, took a new course in its methods of saving taxpayers money. The city's legislators, on the recommendation of the city manager, decided to consolidate several city departments in an effort to eliminate several, supervisory positions. The council agreed to eliminating two supervisors, a foreman, an assistant public works director and a park director, but balked at having the men holding these positions step down into lesser positions at a lower salary.
