They remodeled to suit their tastes
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer There is a family in Coral Gables whose home truly reflects American heritage and traditions. A warm and wholesome atmosphere envelops the home of Rev. Dan Yeary and his wife, Melinda. Adding to the cheerful and welcoming mood are their three children, Wes, 11, Missey, 10, and Doak, 4. The Yearys have decorated their 50-year-old Spanish home with family heirlooms, traditional furniture and old-fashioned trimmings. From the 80-year-old grand piano which decorates the living room to Missey's beautiful doll collection — which includes Betsy Ross, her favorite — the home carries an Americana theme. The dining area is Mrs. Yeary's favorite room. "I really enjoy cooking and entertaining and the dining room is the place where we do most of it," she said. The Ethan Allen dining room set includes a long dark-wood table and high chairs. The matching china cabinet, a gift from students at Texas Tech where Rev. Yeary was a minister, is decorated with a collection of hand painted plates once owned by Mrs. Yeary's mother. A Nativity scene music box bought by the couple in Lucerne also ornaments the dining room china. "The piano is our prized possession," said Rev. Yeary. Mrs. Yeary and Missey both play the antique instrument which has been in the family for more than 80 years. The green and beige shag rug in the living room accents the sofa which is covered in varying tones of green. The cog wheel table in the living room is not only a decorative piece of furniture but a practical one as well. "Doak learned to walk by using the cog wheel," said Rev. Yeary as the youngster held on the table as he walked around it. Also decorating the main living area is a silk print of a Tiger from Japan. "I was born in the year of the tiger and the print was given to me while I was at the University of Tokyo in 1963," Rev Yeary said. Although the home is about five decades old, it has been completely remodeled. The cheery kitchen is done in tones of gold and brown wooden cabinets line the walls. Lace-trimmed off-white curtains cover the kitchen windows, and ornamental tiles decorate the floor. Originally from Central Texas, the Yeary's son. Wes is still a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Tech Raiders. His early American bedroom is filled with decorations of his two favorite football teams. The yellow gingham covered canopy beds in Missey's room are separated by a lighted glass cabinet where she keeps her collection of dolls, glass animals and music boxes. The dolls are dressed on colorful costumes depicting native dresses of countries from all over the world. Her Betsy Ross doll is special to Missey since it was bought in Betsy Ross' house. Little Doak's room is decorated to match his sparkling personality. The predominantly red and blue room, has a bed covered with dozens of stuffed animals — most of them favorite cartoon personalities. Four-year-old Doak's room is decorated to match his sparkling personality and his bed is covered with stuffed animals.
