'This is one of the best Chambers'

From Page 1 of directors member stated. "Nothing formally comes after the blazer for an incentive, except donated prizes on particular membership drives," Ms. St. Germaine said. "The membership committee finds donated prizes." Chegin, on the other hand, said that for bringing in any new members "the incentive is 15 percent — for example, a $150 gift certificate on $1,000 worth of membership dues. It takes the form of merchandise, not cash. It's usually gift-certificates for wearing apparel on the third or fourth $1,000 worth of memberships someone brings in." A member of the Chamber's executive board admitted that there is some pressure exerted on prospective members. "I have heard people say repeatedly that they wouldn't have joined if so and so hadn't bent their arm a little, but they always add that they are glad they joined," the board member stated. "There is a little pressure to join, but people once they're in say, 'you bugged me to join and I'm glad you did,'" he said. The pressure exerted is more social than economic, the board member added, but the feeling is "that we support our members. We purchase through "Gables Pages" (the Chamber's membership directory). "This is one of the best Chambers in the the country and it's very influential," he concluded. A half dozen new Chamber of Commerce members, contacted by The Times/Guide, said they were not pressured to join the Chamber. In some cases, they had sought the Chamber out for the purpose of making business contacts. "I was under no pressure to join," one gallery owner said. "I called up to join, but I have realized that the Chamber of Commerce in any city cannot really take care of individual needs of each members. "There is no business reponse. I am just disappointed there is nothing to the Chamber for us, though they are nice when you call them for information," the gallery owner stated. President St. Germaine agreed, "The Chamber can't really do anything for individual people, we can only work to better the living or working conditions in the community — that will eventually help everyone here. We try to make this a better place." "With a new business here, you need to join the Chamber to be in with the establishment," the representative concluded. New member Guillermo Mendel, of Pan American Marketing Consulting Corp., 220 Miracle Mile, said he joined the Chamber because, "the first thing you need is good human relations. "The Chamber has a yearly magazine and a monthly newsletter, and that is the orientation for a new business in the community," Mendel said. "The people here are wonderful. I got letters from members when the business opened, but there was absolutely no pressure." Dan Brennan, of Brennan Litho, Inc., joined when his friend, Bob Weiss of the University Inn on South Dixie Highway, invited him to a Chamber breakfast. "They were nice guys and I figured I ought to join," Brennan said. "There was no pressure." Dr. Damodar Airan of Airon Enterprises, an import-export business at 278 Aragon Ave., said "This is someting I was interested in myself. I hope it will work two ways, that I can give involvement and a financial contribution and get to be a part of the community. There was no pressure."
