Refuel your wallet by saving on energy use
Energy conservation can keep more than the family car from running out of gas. It can refuel housewives wearied by work in inefficient kitchen, and energize homeowners depressed by rising heating and cooling costs. Electric utilities suggest that the best way to keep energy bills in check is to control home consumption. They say sizable savings can be realized by with tightening up on the home's three biggest fuel users: the furnace, water heater, and major appliances. Here are some suggestions." • Keep the thermostat at 68 degrees during the day; 63 degrees at night. • Keep water temperature setting for appliances within the 140-160 degree limit. • Run washing machines and dryers with full loads. • Use the dishwasher only once a day, after the evening meal. • Take showers instead of baths. They use less water. • Fix leaky faucets. • Cook all the items for a meal at one time. • Don't use the range or oven to heat the kitchen. Day-to-day savings in energy consumption and cost can mount when kitchen appliances are used efficiently. Well-organized storage can be a money-saver, too. The National Kitchen Cabinet Association points out that having sufficient storage cuts down trips to the supermarket — which saves bother, time and gas. Plenty of cabinet space also makes it feasible to buy canned and packaged food in bulk — often a good way to save money. Providing efficient storage is a cabinet's principal function. But, NKCA notes that it is also necessary for the cabinet to be well-constructed, to operate properly, and to stand up to rough daily use. Cabinets that carry the UKCA certification seal qualify on these counts by meeting the construction and performance standards of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
