Gables Hospital disaster drill called success

Because a hospital must be ready at any moment for disaster to strike, Coral Gables Hospital held an unannounced "Disaster Drill" on June 30. The fake emergency was an explosion in Coconut Grove and about a dozen unexpected patients suddenly arrived at the hospital where staffers began to assess the gravity of their injuries and send them to the proper departments. The Coral Gables Police Department participated in the drill by blocking off Douglas Road to allow emergency access, as they would do if a disaster did occur. The drill began with a signal phone call shortly before 10 a.m. and soon the emergency room was swarming with "patients" being sent for surgery, X-rays, respiratory treatment and other care. Dade County Civil Defense coordinator M.R. McMullen called the hospital staff "Well prepared" and said a full critique of the drill will be submitted to the hospital administrators.
