Public works funds may be solution ...to W. Miami woes

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer Years of drainage problems in the City of West Miami are due to be remedied finally through the city's use of nearly $400,000 in federal public works funds. "Hopefully," reported West Miami Mayor Edmund Cooper, "we can attack one of the city's biggest problems." West Miami was the only area city which received any of the billions of dollars in federal public works monies, which were allocated as a means of creating more jobs in municipalities while curing many of the cities' ills. The mayor reported to the city council at its Feb. 2 meeting that the city's administration already has called for bids for the extensive drainage program. The bids will be opened on March 1. The work could begin in March or April and be completed in time for the coming rainy season. The city received $399,200 in public works funds for soakage-type drainage pits at strategic points in the city where rain water stands for long periods following heavy rains. "This is something the city has been trying to remedy through the years," the mayor said, "but West Miami never has had the funds to tackle the problem as thoroughly as we can now." The 13 soakage pit installations will be scattered throughout the 5,000-resident city between Tamiami Trail and Coral Way, west of Red Road. But the four most troublesome areas, at 65th Avenue, 58th Avenue and 62nd Avenue on 9th Street and at 18th Street and 64th Avenue will have priority locations. West Miami submitted a total of seven applications for public works funds to the Economic Development Administration, with the drainage application being chosen by the EDA as the type of public works function worthy of the federal funds. "I don't think any city deserves the funds any more than does West Miami," said Mayor Cooper in December upon learning that West Miami received the public works grant. "Hopefully, we can attack one of the city's biggest problems." Mayor Edmund Cooper
