To adult volunteers, scouting holds fulfillment

From Page 1 Scouting holds a particular kind of fulfillment. "I had a brand new Scout on a camping trip last week. One night, I pointed out a constellation to him. He'd never seen a constellation before. I saw his eyes light up. There's no bigger reward than that." Monte Rassner, an attorney and a scoutmaster for 15 years, recently turned his troop over to a former Scout of that troop, Dr. Robert Grumet. Now Rassner is assistant Scoutmaster. Rassner especially enjoys taking his troop on trips, to Jamaica, Ecuador, the Appalachians, you name it. "It's the greatest thing in the world. The boys are all self-sufficient and good thinkers and they're cooperative." For Rassner, it is a chance to watch young men grow into productive citizens. "These boys, most become community leaders, they go to the top schools in the countries grow up to be doctors, dentists, architects..." Rassner's troop has such a spirit of brotherhood. "When the boys grow up and go away to college they still come back to the troop on their vacations," he says. "They still feel they are part of the troop." Rassner's enthusiasm for scouting has rubbed off on his two sons. Both former Scouts Glenn and Wayne now lead troop 64. Rassner even gets the men in his office involved. "If they don't do something for Scouting they don't get hired" Rassner's hard work has earned him several Scouting awards, most notably the Silver Beaver award, given to perhaps a dozen men in Dade, Broward and Monroe counties who are especially hard workers. For Barbara Sanders, Scouting is something she can do for and with her son, Jack who is a Weebelo in Troop 1. "I'm a single parent, and I work during the day, so I don't have time to be a den mother," she says. "I wanted to get in-volved, so I volunteered as a secretary, something I can do in the evenings." Her duties include most of the paperwork involved in Scouting, working new Scouts into local troops, registration, charters, and the bookwork. In addition, she teaches the boys to tie knots, goes along on field trips and supervises the boys at special events. But it's a job she really enjoys. "It gets hectic at times, but it's good for the boys, it gives them a healthy outlook on life."
