south miami roundup Work at SM Field planned despite no federal funds

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer Even without federal public works funds, the City of South Miami council agreed Feb. 1 to proceed with the upgrading of South Miami Field. The city's legislators authorized the city manager to dig out the latest plans for lights at the field, revamp the plans and call for bids, even though the city may have to come up with more funds. The city was counting heavily on public works funds to help in revitalizing the field at South Miami Junior High School. The lights are the most expensive item in the upgrading, which includes resodding, new rest rooms, some bleachers and ball fields. The city has $135,859 from its latest allocation, $20,000 from the school board, which uses the field during school hours, and $50,000 in community development funds from Metro. But the lights alone will cost about $160,000, which doesn't leave much for the accessories. Councilwoman Mrs. Cathy McCann announced that she has had anonymous offers of donations from individuals to help out in the field's upgrading. But she added that these funds would be earmarked for a public address system and a platform for announcers. The city, to complete work at the field, will likely dig deeper into its revenue bond funds, from which it already has withdrawn monies for the $135,859 for the lights. South Miami City Manager Jack Present is returning to a program he began, but discontinued, of meeting with South Miamians who have complaints about city service. The city manager began the program shortly after he took over as city manager in May, 1975, but decided to drop the meetings when no one showed up. "I'm going to set aside the second and fourth Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. to hear complaints, compliments or anything else that the resident has to say," said City Manager Present.

South Miami's Lee Park area tagged for improvement projects

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer Federal funds, totaling $855,000, are being designated for three separate projects in the improvement of the City of South Miami's Lee Park area. The announcement of the proposed improvements was made by the coordinator of Metro's office of Community Development, Sergio Pereira, at the South Miami council's Feb. 1 meeting. The $855,000 will go primarily for the improvement of SW 64th Street through the city's black area, the construction of a child care facility at SW 66th Street and 62nd Court and the planning and engineering design of sanitary sewers for the portion of Lee Park which has not yet been sewered. The SW 64th Street (Hardee Drive) improvements will include the construction of sewers, sidewalks, storm drainage, lighting, widening and landscaping, at a cost of $370,000. The child care facility, costing $300,000, is the result of South Miami being designated as one of five areas greatest in need of child care facilities. Preliminary work was done on the project last year, when designs for the child care center were completed and reviewed by a task force of Lee Park residents. The sanitary sewer designs are primarily for an area bounded by SW 62nd Street on the north, SW 59th Avenue on the east, SW 66th Street on the south, and SW 60th Court and SW 62nd Avenue on the west. At a cost of $185,000, the designs will be used for the construction of the sewers to be financed over the next several fiscal years.

Palmetto High graduate named SM deputy city clerk

The City of South Miami has a new deputy city clerk, who is a former flight attendant with TWA and a 1970 graduate of Palmetto High School. She is 24-year-old Karen Chandler, who recently returned from Dallas where she had served as a secretary for two separate firms. Her hobbies are tennis, botany and the making of hangers for plants and other things. She replaces Sarah Cadenhead, who left the city's employ to go with the county court system, and will assist City Clerk Amie Glazer as the keeper of the city's records.
