Home fits mode of living

Jim's office office is on other side of living room fireplace. Home fits mode of living From Page 14/23 pool-patio area, and the clear lucite risers in the staircase give the feeling of being suspended over the pool, which ends where the house begins. Off of this hallway is the dining room, and one enormous family room/kitchen complex, which the Baums say fits their mode of living. "We entertain a lot," says Judy, "and we find that whenever we have a party everyone always ends up in the kitchen; so by eliminating the walls between these rooms, I can be working in the kitchen and still be a part of the part." The long wall of the family room consists of sliding glass doors which open onto the pool-patio deck, which, says Jim, brings the outdoors inside and obviates the need for a screen enclosure. Also downstairs, in another "pavilion," are the two back bedrooms, one for guests, the other belonging to 15-month-old Jimmy. Because of the high ceilings in these rooms, Jim was able to build loft space for storage or, in his son's case, an eventual play area to be reached by ladder. From this spot another staircase leads up to the bedroom wing of the second floor. Here are located a hobby room/den, the master bedroom with its walk-in closet the size of many smaller bedrooms, and a beautiful all-wood bathroom which was intentionally designed to resemble a sauna. On the other side of the connecting bridge is the living room - ups[?]ts for privacy - separated by a pass-through stone fireplace from Jim's office. The entire house is done in earth tones, with predominantly orange accents in splashy area rugs and huge fabric wall hangings. ("There's no way we could afford the size paintings we'd need to fit the scale of this house," says Jim.) And how is Jim Baum filling his spare time now that the house is finally completed and all that's left is to fill it up with furniture? "I'm planning to build another house," he says, "and whichever one we like best we'll live in, and sell the other. I enjoy this, and I've really gotten the bug now."

dear decorator ... al evans

Dear Decorator: I have just bought a home with rough plaster on the bathroom walls. I would like to paper them but don't want to get involved with sanding the walls. What other alternatives do I have? Marian Keene Coral Gables Dear "Rough": First, good luck with your new home. I agree - sanding walls to prepare them for wallcovering is a tedious and sometimes costly job, but alas, for most wallpapers it's the only solution. There is an alternative, however. A heavy textured wallcovering, such as grasscloth, burlap, suede or cork works reasonably well on rough walls. Lining will help a little, too. If all else fails, a good flat paint in a super accent color makes a fine background for interesting prints and wall decor. You make the choice, and good luck!
