sports briefly — Boating class set in Gables

The Miami Powerboat Squadron will offer a free basic boating course at Ponce de Leon Junior High School, starting on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The course will run for nine weeks with a two-hour session every Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. Lessons include small boat handling, use of charts and compass, safety, trailering and rules to avoid collisions. Anyone over 12 years of age is invited to take the course. It is not necessary to own a boat.

Cavalier girl cagers upset unbeaten, top-ranked Killian

By STEVE DAVIDSON Correspondent | The girls' basketball team captured the headlines at Coral Gables High as they upset undefeated and top ranked Killian. The wrestling and basketball teams also had good weeks and the golf team opened its season. Backed by a balanced scoring attack, the Cavs easily defeated the previously unbeaten Cougars 47-31. Beverly Holcomb scored 16 points, Sandy Wallace added 10, and Karen Crow controlled the boards with 12 rebounds. The Cavs also defeated Coral Park 55-41 behind Ana Masdeu's 17 points to even the teams' record at five and five. The wrestling team started a two match victory streak by defeating Central 45-11 and Columbus 31-15. After suffering three defeats by slim margins, the team raised its record to 8-4. In the Central match, Paul Aiello (114 pounds) recorded the fastest pin. Against Columbus, the outcome was in doubt until Frank Zagarino (170 pounds) pinned his opponent to assure the win. The basketball team continued to play.500 ball as they went 1-1 over the past week. Their record is now 9-10 for the entire season. The Cavs defeated the Southridge Spartans 66-58 behind Ron McGhaee's 27 points. They then dropped an 81-71 game to the Columbus Explorers at Columbus. Lester Jenkins led the team with 23 points, and McGhaee also added 16 in a losing effort. The golf team opened its season with one win and a loss. The team is trying to defend its state title from last year. Returning lettermen Mark Bradford (one under par) and John Pallot (even par) paced the Cavs as they defeated the Southwest Eagles five matches to none.

Led by freshman Lourdes downs Key West

Led by substitute freshman Claudia Puerta, the Lourdes Academy tennis team defeated Key West 6-1 Friday, Feb. 4. Miss Puerta, playing for injured Chris Wells, downed Key West's Pam Oakes 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Also in singles play, senior Fifi Sardina won the first two sets of her match 6-1, 6-0. Carolyn Dyer and Meredith Poole also won their first two sets. Maria de Goytisolo won her match by default. After losing their first doubles match, Lourdes came back to win the second on the play of Silvia Garrigo and Silvia Tarafo. The Lourdes swimming team, coached by Betty Groven, swam in an invitational relay meet Jan. 23. All high schools in the county participated in the meet, and Lourdes took first place for the events they entered. Elke LeMaire, Karre Cox, Kelly Novac, Angela Bolet and Brigid Minahan led the team.

County pistol tourney slated for next month

The 12th Annual Dade County Pistol Championship and International Preliminary Tryouts for the 18th U.S. International Championships will be held March 3, 4, 5 and 6 at the Trail Glades Ranges on Tamiami Trail. Sponsored by the Palmetto Pistol Club, the pistol tournament is the largest in South Florida and usually draws top military, police and civilian competitors. John Firley, the Florida State Pistol Champion and member of the Coral Gables Police Department, will be among those competing for top honors. Over the years, the Palmetto Pistol Tournament has evolved into two separate matches of different type competition. First the conventional National Rifle Association (NRA) pistol matches that require 90 rounds with each of three pistols: .22 caliber, center fire and .45 caliber, for a total possible score of 2,700 points. Second is the International Pistol Matches (Olympic style Matches) that include 60 rounds with each of four pistols: free pistol, standard pistol, center fire pistol and rapid fire pistol, for a total possible score of 2,400 points. The matches are open to NRA members only. There will be a Fish Fry Dinner following the matches Sunday. Tickets for non-competitors will be a $1.50 donation.

Coral Park golfer wins medal in loss

The Palmetto boys' golf team defeated Coral Park, 3-2, at the Palmetto Golf Course. Russel Grace of Coral Park was the medalist with a one-over-par 37.

The Killian boys' team also won their meet against Miami Beach. | Tennis | Mike Brunnberg of Palmetto beat Doug Prinz of Southwest, 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles as Palmetto defeated Southwest, 7-0. | Soccer | Al Acevedo scored five goals as Deerborne Academy whipped Coral Gables, 11-0.
