Nothing 'average' in this SD home

Kitchen "island" was added as stopping-off place Nothing 'average' in this SD home By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer Talk to Jim Baum about his "do-it-yourself" projects, and you'll find it's a term he takes quite literally. The Baums' spectacular wood-and-glass home in South Dade was custom-designed and constructed to the smallest detail, and Jim can honestly say that he "did it himself." This would be an impressive feat for a house of average dimensions and qualifications, but there is nothing "average" about the house that Jim built. With the help of his wife, Judy, willing friends, and the advice of a local architect, Jim conceived of the floor plan and built the sprawling house from scratch, over an 18-month period. First he and Judy made a tree survey of the 1-1/3 acre lot, which dictated the design of the house, and led them to rotate it five degrees in order to preserve some of the existing oaks and poincianas. Friends helped clear the land, and together they put [?] the wood frames, did neir own electrical wiring, built the swimming pool, poured the concrete for the driveways, made the casement windows, and installed the 8,000 square feet of shake roof. "I spent my whole life hanging around construction sites," says Jim, an Air Jamaica pilot who also holds degrees in mechanical and structural engineering, "and what I didn't already know, I found out by reading books on the subject." Most of the features in the house, he says, came straight from California, where he has lived most of his life. In addition to ideas, the 35,000 feet of lumber that went into the house came from a building supply company in California, filling one entire railroad car. While this may sound extravagant, Jim claims it was one of the many ways in which he managed to cut costs while building the house. Seen from the air—something Jim is frequently able to do—the house looks like six separate but connected pavilions(pool pagoda, carport, living room/garage, master bedroom, family room/kitchen, and back bedroom wing). From numerous vantage points inside the house all these separate sloping roofs are visible, which was the effect Jim was after. "If you stick with one large roof," he says, "you don't have that view." Dramatic views are evident everywhere, due to the unique "open" plan of the house. No matter where one stands it is possible to see 60-70 feet in all directions, because of the absence of usual doors between rooms. (With the exception of the bedrooms, baths and closets, there are virtually no doors in the entire house.) Although the house contains "only" 3750 square feet of living space, Jim explains, because of these long lines of sight it actually appears much larger. Upon entering the house an imposing view is obtained by an enormous double-volume entrance foyer, with a staircase leading up to the bridge connecting the two upstairs wings. An entire wall of glass behind the staircase looks onto the See LARGE, Page 15/22
