$34,000 Residence Tops of $137,800 In Building Permits
A $34,000 residence, pool and screen enclosure topped the 10 building permits issued by the Coral Gables Building Department last week. The total was $137,800. The valuation on the building, owned by Groveland Builders, at 13031 Lerida St., does not include cost of land. Other permits were issued to the University of Miami for a foundation to the addition of the Richter Library, $12,000. W. M. Charlton, 1210 Capri St., residence, $14,500. Speyer McAllister, 601 Avenue San Lorenzo, residence, $31,000. A. Chassen, 720 Avenue Paradiso, addition, $1,600. Roscoe O. Pauley, 1010 Country Club Prado, residence, $25,300. Climatrol Corp., 351 Minorca Ave., additions and alterations, $6,000. Rovin Construction Co., 11080 Paradella, pool, $3,000. Charles E. Taylor, 440 Arvida Parkway, seawall dock, $7,200. International Developers, 13061 Lerida Street, swimming pool, $2,500. Dr. and Mrs. F. C. Meadows, 5663 Michelangelo St., roof addition, $700.
Gables Men Help ARC In Program
J. R. Brumby and James C. Herren of Coral Gables will play important roles May 2 when the Dade County Chapter of the American Red Cross elects a new Board of Directors. Brumby, 800 Anastasia Ave., as chairman of the nominating committee, will submit the names for election to the board. Herren, 1120 S. Alhambra Cir., chapter treasurer, will give the yearly treasurer's report. Guest speaker will be Col. George M. Knauf, USAF, who will talk on "Man in Space."
Six New Chamber Directors
Related story on page 1 Shown above are the six newly-elected directors of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. Their names were announced last week. They are Ivan R. Cunningham, Robert R. Hildreth, Edward T. Rempe, Frank E. Kerdyk, Robert E. Yoxall and Edward F. Brown. The men will be introduced at the Chamber's annual banquet to be held next week at Coral Gables Country Club.
Violations Set Right By Owner
A wayward property owner got approval from the City Commission April 18 to undo some zoning violations. Parkleigh Commonwealth Enterprises, Inc., the owner, got approval to use a new building at 100-132 Madeira for combined apartment-office use after obtaining off-street parking and agreeing to tie the land together in one parcel. The firm had converted the entire building to apartment use without approval of the city. As approved, the building will have four apartment units on the second floor and two or three offices on the street floor.
Sharp Eye, Steady Hand Win for Us
Coral Gables youths took second and third places in an archery tournament held at the Youth Center last Saturday. Second place winner from the Gables was Jim Reilly, 14, of 500 Alhamnra Cir. The contest, for boys and girls 10 to 16 years old, was won by bowmen from Fort Lauderdale. Third place winners were Jim Holmes, 14, of 524 Navarre Ave., and Pat Ryan, 12, 1414 South Dixie Hwy.

'June-Mad' Will Open
Members of the Junior Repertory Theater will present "June-Mad" May 5 and 6 at the Gallery Theatre with a May 7 matinee closing. There are 13 in the cast with Susan Seiderman taking the feminine lead, Dennis Aronson and Brookes Prewitt have the dual male lead.
Deel Threatened
Several phone calls threatening to break all windows because of Sunday openings have been received by Deel Motors at 4811 Le Jeune Rd. Coral Gables police report that employes there have received calls complaining about cars being sold on Sunday. The city has no "blue law" on Sunday closings, but it has been a seldom-broken, unwritten law among most merchants.
Underwater 'Test' Is Almost Fatal
A 33-year-old visitor from Scotland nearly drowned in a home pool Friday morning while seeing how long she could stay under water, according to Coral Gables police. Elizabeth H. Dalglish, a visitor at the home of Maitland Smith, 6508 Caballero Blvd., was released from Doctors' Hospital later the same day after being treated. According to Officer Robert Faidley, the near-victim was swimming in the deep end of the pool and holding her breath when she blacked out. Smith pulled the woman from the pool. Faidley and officer Walter Stathers gave artificial respiration shortly after they arrived and found her having difficulty breathing.
Last Call
More than half the tickets available for the annual Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce banquet have been sold. The event will be held at the city's country club next Thursday night with Fred Smith, nationally-known sales consultant, as speaker. About 250 people are expected.
INTERMEDIATE BRIDGE
If you know North from South but need your bridge repaired, a course in intermediate bridge starting May 10, at the Coral Gables Youth Center may interest you. The course, continues through June 28 and will teach the Goren method, with Olga Poe instructing.
Dr. Myers New Dean
Dr. Clark E. Myers was appointed Dean of the School of Business Administration and professor of management at the University of Miami. Dr. Myers, a member of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration faculty, will join the UM administration July 1. During July and August he will work with Dr. Grover A. J. Noetzel, retiring dean, on plans and programs for the School of Business Administration. On Sept. 1, when Dean Noetzel, as has been announced, will relinquish administrative duties to devote his full time to teaching, Dr. Myers will take charge of the school's administration. Dr. Myers is married and the father of two teen age sons. His wife, the former Miss Cora Henley Hepworth, is a graduate of the University of Kansas.
