Pa's a Cat, Ma's a Lion; Their Son? He's a Dog

Pretty Joan Anderson and Barbara Farrell pose with their rare Saluki dogs, to be one of the special exhibits in the Kids Dog Show in the Central Shopping Plaza's first annual Country Fair today through Saturday. Two of the most unusual dogs in the world — one the only of its kind in existence and the other one of five in this country — will be on exhibit at the Kids Dog Show at Central Shopping Plaza through Saturday, April 29th. The dog show, sponsored by the Ken-L-Ration Co., is a feature of the center's huge annual Country Fair and giant merchant's sale. Tom Homberger of Comfort Kennels of Hialeah says that the seventh month old white Italian Miniature Greyhound which will be shown by his kennel, is the only all-white dog of its breed in the world. Probably one of the most interesting of all dogs is the Miniature Italian Greyhound, which Homberger is largely responsible for bringing into this country. Homberger is the president of the Pan American Italian Greyhound Association which controls 90 per cent of the world's miniature Italian Greyhounds. A rare Saluki, one of five in the U.S., will also be shown, the Saluki first made its appearance in 5000 B.C. and sells for approximately $800 and must be ordered a year in advance. Termed the Holy Dog of Arabia, the animal is the first known domestic breed of dog which descended from the Jaguar and the lion, according to Homberger. The sleek creature can actually run 10 miles per hour faster than a greyhound and has been clocked at 52 miles per hour. Their keen eyes can spot birds unseeable by the human eye. The Saluki is peculiar in that it has only two speeds of locomotion... either a slow walk or an all out dash at near the speed of wind, running on feet padded by a layer of fine hair.
