Babysitting Out at Gables High

H. N. RATH "When this school opened, I decided we were going to stress academics and I let the teachers know it. "I told them they were not to be baby sitters and sit in the back of the class. They were going to give their students a sound education." This was H. N. Rath, principal at Coral Gables High, telling why his students win so many honors. "And the teachers have played an important role in the classrooms. In each class, they have emphasized academic achievement. "Each teacher in his own capacity has made his own contribution. "And we've got fine facilities. Not only in chemistry, but where ever good facilities are needed. "Part of the success is due to the good feeder schools we have that are doing a good job. "And we've got a high percentage of parents who are keenly interested in their child's education. "The parents are proud of the academic approach this school is taking and they're backing us up 100 per cent. "Now I had parents who came to me when the school first opened and said to me 'What is your homework policy?' "Imagine that! They were afraid their children were going to work too hard. "And our honor classes weren't too popular when they first started. Some said it wasn't democratic grouping all the intelligent students together. "What did the honor classes do? It stimulated the youngsters interested in that subject. It was a chance for stimulation instead of being bored to death! "The attitude of everyone here is to succeed, to be superior, to strive hard. "And the problem is to maintain it because we can develop an apathy today just as easy."

Johnny Going To School? He Must Register Today

If your child is to enter the first grade this September at Coral Gables Elementary School, he must register today (Thursday) between 9-10 a.m. in the cafeteria. Parents can register their child if he will be six-years-old on or before Jan. 1, 1962. Florida law states you've got to present a birth certificate at registration. Hospital or baptism certificates will not do. After you've registered your child, you're invited to visit one of the first grade classes to acquaint your child with what it is like and to have refreshments. If interested in visiting a first grade class, you'll be given a room number when you register. The class you visit will not necessarily be the one your child will be in next term.

Early Birthday

Coral Gables celebrated its 36th birthday Tuesday when children from the third grade at West Laboratory School appeared with their teachers before the City Commission and presented home-made birthday cards. The city will not be 36 until next month, but the premature celebration failed to hurt anybody's feelings.
