Noted Composer Will Play at UM

An internationally famous composer, Alexander Tcherepnin, will be among soloists for the second annual festival of American Music opening Wednesday (May 3) at the University of Miami under direction of Dr. Fabien Sevitzky. Tcherepinn, who will perform his second piano concerto during the concluding concert of the three day festival, will be joined by members of the University's music faculty and other guest artists in the performances that will begin each evening at 8:30 with a festival fanfare. There will be no charge for admission. The opening concert Wednesday will feature the Charles Ives first sonata for violin and piano, with soloists Joan Field, violin, and Virginia Gaskell Urban, piano. Duo-pianists Mildred and Gerald Snyder will play two works by Wallingford Riegger and Aaron Copland's "Danza Cubano." Rounding out the program will be Alec Wilder's first sonata for horn and piano and the "Poem" for flute and piano by Charles T. Griffes. Four compositions for chamber groups will make up the second program Thursday. It will open with the Norman Dello Joio trio for flute, cello and piano, followed by a sextet by Frederick Youngfelt. The unusual "Tryptich" for soprano and strings by Arthur Shepherd and the Walter Piston "Divertimento" will conclude the program. Glenn Draper, choral director at the University, will conduct a varied program of choral music Friday night that will include Harl McDonald's "Builders of America" for narrator and chorus. For the concluding concert Saturday, Dr. Sevitzky will conduct a program of orchestral music highlighted with a performance by the Tcherepnin Concerto with the famed composer as soloist. A fanfare composed by Tcherepnin will open the program that also will include William Schuman's "String Symphony" and the Golden Gate Overture by Dai-Keong Lee.
