A Girl Meets a Feller Over Checkers

WAITING FOR THE DENTIST, this young lady, eight-year-old Nancy Ackerson, wondered which move to make. We think you can tell what happened when 12-year-old William Strobinsky's turn came. Nancy lives at 520 SW 18th Ave. William lives at 1620 SW 9th St. They're in Gables Dr. Walter MacDonall's offices.

Gables Deaths Mrs. Poston, Came Year Ago

Services and interment were held in Elizabeth, N.J. for Mrs. Catherine M. Poston, 64, of 301 Segovia St., who died Saturday. Mrs. Poston, a Gables resident for the past year, is from Cranford, N.J. She is survived by a son, Wade.

Mrs. Heery Dead at 78

Mrs. Etta Heery, of 1520 Dorado Ave., a member of the Church of the Little Flower, died Saturday. She was 78. Rosary services were held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Van Orsdel's Coral Gables Chapel. Requiem mass was said 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Little Flower. Mrs. Heery, who came here 26 years ago from Long Island, N.Y., lived the past two-and-a-half years with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Hillmer. Also surviving are a son, Martin; a brother and 10 grandchildren.

Ray Davies New Pastor At Le Jeune

The Rev. Ray W. Davies, associate pastor of the Riviera Presbyterian for the past three years, becomes the new pastor of the Le Jeune Road Presbyterian Church, Monday. Reverend Davies is spending this week in Dallas, Texas where he is attending the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Reverend Davies is spending came here three years ago from Spartanburg, S.C. They have two children, Billy, 6 and Julie, 4.

Our Correspondent Tops Zame, Gross Win Awards

By LESLIE GROSS Correspondent The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday that William Zame, 914 Palermo, and Leslie Gross, 6380 S.W. 62nd Ter., are recipients of National Merit Scholarships. These boys survived two comprehensive exams to become winners. Some 900 students across the country out of over 470,000 who took the first exam reach winner status. Financial awards range from $100-$1,500 to the college of the winner's choice. Zame, who placed first in the State of Florida in the National Match contest for two years in a row, hopes to use his scholarship at the California Institute of Technology. Bill was also a GM Scholarship semi-finalist, an NHS scholarship semi-finalist winner of the school chemistry medal, a participant in numerous science and mathematics summer camps. He is currently taking advanced physics, calculus, and topography courses at the University of Miami. Zame is Gables' Silver Knight candidate for Mathematics. Gross, a Westinghouse Honors Group winner, NHS Scholarship finalist, GM Scholarship semi-finalist, and Silver Knight entry in general scholarship, has won awards on county and state levels in French, German, and spelling. He won the school biology medal, attended FSU. Science Camp, UM Marine Lab, was a National Council of Teachers of English school finalist, and had an essay published in the National High School Essay Anthology. Martin Goldberg 2776 S.W. 32nd Ave., placed third in the District Exchange Club Speech contest, Martin received $125 for his efforts. The National Honor Society held its spring banquet initiation, and election of officers April 18. Officers for the coming year are President, Jack Catlin; Vice-president, Steve Schere; secretary, Ruth Kavenoff; treasurer, Faye Angel.

Judea Elects Goldberg

Mrs. David Goldberg is the new president of the Sisterhood of Temple Judea. Mrs. Helen D. Cohen is the recording secretary and Mrs. Sidney Jacobs is corresponding secretary. Installation of officers (15 in all) will take place May 24 at 1 p.m. at the Temple. Installing officer will be Mrs. Sam Silver. Saturday at 10:30 a.m. the Bas Mitzvah of Ilene Leslie Corenblun will take place during the Torah service. Her parents will be hosts at the Kiddush Santification following the service.

Alweiss Will Be Bar Mitzvah

The Bar Mitzvah of Louis Alweiss will take place this Saturday at Temple Zamora. Among out of town guests arriving for the ceremony and reception will be Mrs. Herbert Tannebaum of New York City. A story in last week's Times incorrectly identified the date.
