'That You Never See in Paris!' Says Petite Mademoiselle Dryden

The drugstore buzzed during lunch hour. Dishes clattered. Hamburgers sizzled. Far in the back sat petite Dorothy Dryden eating lunch. She's five feet tall and weighs 95 pounds. She's from Paris. There are striking differences, she said, in the life, women and men of Paris and Coral Gables. "Especially in the eating habits," she said, as she finished her scrambled eggs. LUNCHEON DRINK "In Paris you never think of going to lunch with out having an aperitif. It's a cocktail. "And in Paris there is no breakfast. There's coffee and quason. It's like a Danish." She raised a dainty hand and simultaneously arched an eyebrow. "So when an American goes to Paris and asks for eggs and bacon a Frenchman flys up in the air. "And lunch? We have no lunch hour. We call it our main meal. French people eat their main meal at noon and have a small supper at night." WOMEN DIFFER But if the eating habits between the two cities are different, the contrast between the women is even greater. "To a Frenchwoman who comes to Coral Gables, the Gables woman is badly dressed. "They see a woman with curlers in her hair and walking down the street in shorts. That you never see in Paris! "And yet," she paused, "the Frenchwoman has much less clothes. I see an American woman buying clothes, but she never seems to wear them." SALES She shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe they see them on sale." Dorothy, manager of Cendy's on Miracle Mile, was neatly dressed in a two-piece suit, white with blue weave that accentuated her red hair and brown eyes. She lifted her coffee cup to drink. On a finger of her left hand she wore a ring supporting a topaz stone an inch thick. On the other hand was a diamond ring. BE FRANK "Now I'm going to be frank. When a French girl goes into a clothing store, she's going to feel ashamed to go out of the store without buying something. "But a Coral Gables woman? She'll come in and browse around." And Parisian men are very different from the average Gables male, she said. "You would never catch a Parisian husband taking the laundry to the laundromat!" Again she raised her hand and arched an eyebrow. "But you see an American man do that! "Or a Frenchman going shopping? He would think his wife was crazy. Let's face it. He thinks it's a woman's job." After a few minutes passed and Dorothy talked about other differences, she leaned across the table. "Coral Gables women have it so much easier. "And they don't know it." MRS. DOROTHY DRYDEN

Swimming Class Ready For Kids 4-6

Swimming lessons for children aged 4 to 6 will begin May 1 at Venetian Pool. Registration is open for the month-long, one-hour-each-day classes. The instructors are from the University of Miami. There is a nominal fee. For more information call John Rosasco at the pool (HI 6-1801).

PTA Approves Of Cafeteria

A PTA committee which stepped in unexpectedly to inspect the Coral Gables High cafeteria came away with words of praise. The committee's report said the cafeteria's food was "superior." However, the committee felt the students do not have enough time for lunch. The committee gave plaudits to cafeteria manager Mrs. Laura Olson.

Dean Bitter Will Play

John Bitter, Dean of the School of Music, University of Miami, will be one of the members of a quartet appearing Sunday at the Musicians Club of America 4 p.m. musicale. Mr. Bitter will play the flute, Joseph Tarpley, the piano, Victor Stern, the viola, and Lucas Drew, the contrabass.

The snack bar at the University of Miami Medical School has been robbed blind. The money, $58, belonging to the Florida Council For the Blind, was taken in a burglary discovered Monday morning.
