Linda King Chosen High Lights Editor; Cabinet Also Named
By RUTH KAVENOFF Correspondent Jeff Tew, President of Gables Student Government for 1961-62, has just appointed the members of the Student Council Cabinet for the coming year. Those announced to date are Lee Sandler, secretary of state; Caroline Patterson, secretary of finance; Bob Hayes, serant at arms; Donna Criswell, aplain. Aleda Pintavalle, secretary of sports; Terry Engleking, secretary of publicity; and Ruth Kavenoff, secretary of student action. They will join Larry Blume, Vice-President; Timmie Dutcher, Secretary; Mary Jo Malice, Treasurer. Linda King has just been named editor-in-chief of the '61 High Lights high school paper. Linda plans to major in journalism at the University of Florida. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James N. King of 1115 S. Alhambra Circle. With school only three weeks away, Gableites are now returning from various programs and many student activities already are getting under way. Recently returned from Tallahassee where they attended Girls' State are Donna Criswell and Bebe Parker. Boys' State delegates Larry Blume, Dennis Brown, Robb Hasencamp, Jeff Tew and Ted Waters also have returned. At State Junior Civitan statewide Crescent Club convention, Dava Davis was elected lieutenant governor. Jack Catlin, Lee Groth, chael Machtey, John Shaw and Jim Young attended the University of Miami Summer in College Program. Students in summer science programs included Herb Bachelor, Norton Greenfield, Mike Joyce, Myron Mass, Mark Weiss and Mike Zinner. Marine Lab participants were Kathy Baskin, Rodger ss, Jane Carol Johnson, thy Kurtz, Ruth Scally and Jeff Strumpf. Michael Machtey represented Florida at Kenyon College Summer Math Program. Geoffrey Joseph, Chuck Reiter, Terry Stein and Tony Wasserman took part in the University of Miami Math Camp. The members of Coral Gables Literary Society have been mpiling a magazine which y hope to publish sometime in the near future. Rusti Hausman, 1962 Cavaleon Editor, and her staff are already at work on this year's yearbook. Senior Editors Linda Berkowite, Lynn Fenster and Janet Swanson have already organized senior graduation pictures. Senior Class officers for 1961-62 are Robb Hasencamp, President; Ted Waters, Vice-president; Kate McNeil, Secretary; Dennis Brown, Treasurer. Junior Class officers are: John Shea, President; Gil Wheeler, Vice-president; Barbara Waugh, Secretary; Jeanne Crawford, Treasurer. Football practice starts August 21. Returning lettermen include Mike Brady, Jack Card, Chappy Cesarano, Joel Goldman, Fred Goldsmith, and Robb Hasencamp. In their first game of the season, the Cavallers will face Palmetto. Cheerleading practices soon begin too. On this year's varsity squad are Seniors: Donna DeCostas, Timmie Dutcher, Carolyn Keefer, Sharon Lester and Bebe Parker; Juniors: Judy Fuller, Judy Kaufman, Liz Kononoff, Molly Megathlin and Carolyn Miller. Drill practices will soon begin for the Cavalettes. This year they will be led by Bebe Buice, Captain; Lois Stokes, Co-captain; Sue Atteridg, President. August 29 all new band members report for marching practice. George McLain is Drum Major and Vic Fishman is Band Captain. Something new has been added to Gables. For the first time, students will find themselves in TV classes. Many students are taking 7:30 classes; for them school will end at 2 p.m. Incoming sophomores will take a special drivers training course. From all indications this promises to be a good year for Gables.
