Center's Sparkplug Goes Back to School

A man in a hurry to go someplace so he can hurry back is William Jenness, supervisor of athletics at the Youth Center until this week when he resigned to go to Penn. Jenness borrowed $1,000 from the Coral Gables Civitan Foundation to take advantage of a graduate assistantship in parks and recreation. The 28-year-old Korean War veteran and University of Miami graduate leaves the city in the wake of a five-year record of accomplishments. He joined the city in 1956 while studying at UM for a double degree in physical education and recreation. That was a non-paying job under former director of recreation Charles McCarthy. But the job grew and soon there was a paycheck and the payrolls got fatter and he acquired a title. "I've had no bad problems, plenty of help and worked with the finest group of youngsters," Jenness said of his experience here. "I hope I can get back," he said. The city hasn't appointed a replacement for Jenness yet, said Youth Center Director Jeanette Hunt. She indicated it might take a while and take some shopping around. Jenness said he'll have plenty of material for his master's thesis — his experience here with the Coral Gables recreation program. A large part of that, and something he inaugurated, was formation of off-season high school and college basketball teams in two five-team leagues. These included some of the top stars from UM, University of Florida, Stetson University, Florida State University and Rutgers. High school stars came from Coral Gables, Edison, Jackson, Palmetto and Christopher Columbus High Schools. The teams gave these players an opportunity to sharpen their skills by playing with hoopmen of their own class at a time when they would normally be out of practice, said Jenness. BILL JENNESS
