'Fed Up With Servant Question,' Winstons Raised Their Own

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor You will hardly believe it, but a family of six, Mr. and Mrs. Paul D. Winston of 3601 Toledo St. and their four teen-aged children live in one of the biggest little houses in the Gables. In addition there are two Siamese cats, "Bu Bu" and "She Bu" and four Siamese kittens. The Winstons came here five years ago from Daytona Beach where they owned a big two-story, Spanish villa-type house, four blocks from the ocean. That house required servants, as did their former home in Pittsburgh. "I was fed up with the servant question, the large landscaped place, and the dampness in Daytona," Mr. Winston said, and I told my wife we're going to move to Coral Gables and raise our own help." He meant what he said. The Winstons have two daughters, Ora Jeanne (Jeanie), and Marguerite, named for her mother and called "Mimi." The boys are James F., and Paul Jr., called "Pete." We could see what Mr. Winston meant, as we sat in their living room chatting. Mrs. Winston had gone on an errand of friendship; she had taken an elderly friend to the doctor's. Jim was on a ladder doing some touch-up painting on the house, while Pete was busy with the lawn and clipped hedges. The Winston home is a gem. It fits perfectly on a triangular lot formed by the intersection of Escobar Avenue at Toledo, and the view from one of the two immense picture windows in the living room is one of lush lawns, towering trees and homes. The other window opposite looks out on the patio. This room, and alcove dining room beyond, is furnished in modern-style furniture sprinkled with several Italian porcelain antiques the Winstons brought from their Daytona Beach home. The room is in the center of the home, with halls on either side, opening into two bedrooms and baths suites; the suite to the north for the parents, the one south for the children. Mr. Winston is a man of many talents. He is an artisan, for he successfully installed room dividers, an intricate job, and they work. His new Buick was about a foot too long for the two-car garage, so he removed a wall of the garage closet just enough to take the automobile, and didn't spoil the closet's usefullness. He is proud of his large tool chest. It has 10 drawers, all lined with felt. It had belonged to a jeweler. He also made all of his children's toys at his fully equipped work bench. In the all-electrically controlled kitchen, a large round green plastic-topped breakfast table with six matching chairs stands. It wouldn't have surprised this reporter at all, if the table and chairs had suddenly and quietly disappeared due to some device of the craftsmanship of Paul Winston. No Integration

Four young Negroes attempted to integrate University Burger King, 1100 South Dixie Hwy. the night of Aug. 10. The Negroes, two males and their dates, were served food but were refused tables when they attempted to eat at the restaurant.
