A Question Asked And So, They Took Cubans

By ELVA CHARLTON Correspondent Where do the hundreds of Cubans go to live after they arrive in Miami? We have just thrown down the velvet carpet of welcome for four separate Cuban families in front of our apartment building in the Gables. What's so strange about that? It breaks all the restrictions we have had ever since we built it several years ago. The six unit, one-bedroom building was a sideline of business endeavor with us. We restricted it to people who would give us no trouble — no children, no pets; quiet, preferably elderly couples or newly married, or reputable bachelors. Working women and their mothers, etc. "What is the objection people have about having Cubans for neighbors in the Gables?", I asked a real estate woman friend. "There's so many of them. They sleep all day and stay up and talk all night. I think you'll be sorry," she answered. But I'm not sorry. At least, not now. I learned a valuable lesson while I worked harder than I had in a long time to clean and get ready for occupancy three separate apartments in four hours' time. I found a poignant story in the luggage which was already on the floor, the books on the tables, the clothes hanging in the closets. A 10-year-old boy was the only one who could speak any English. Haltingly, he told me of his big home, all gone now. "Plenty of those," he said, pointing to the colored girl I had taken from working in my house to work in theirs. No women were in sight that day, but every once in a while, several cars would drive up in front of the building. Cuban men sprayed out like ants and seemed to swarm in and out of the three apartments. I don't know who they thought I was. I couldn't understand a word they said. My husband, the hardheaded business man he professes to be, has been running around all week buying rollaway beds for the three children and extra older people. And linens, cooking equipment, many things we never supplied before. We must store the air conditioners we have bought and paid for which were ready to go in. These people were so glad to have a home where they could be together, they preferred to have the rent adjusted and do without airconditioning. My husband is the realist, my son (in business with us) the idealist, and I'm the balance wheel between. I like to think of myself as specializing in human emotions. This was my first brush with the Cuban situation. Do you readers think I'll be sorry?
