THE J. R. BEAVERS She’s 80; He’s 89; They Find Life a Golden Time

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter "I'll tell you one reason why I'm not afraid of death," said the 80-year-old woman. "I had been working at a hospital for one week," said Mrs. J. R. Beaver, 1418 Mantua Ave., "when an old man came in and I had to take care of him. "I had put his nightgown on and he was ready for bed. Then he put his head on my shoulder . . . and he was gone." This happened during World War II when Mrs. Beaver was an aide at Hollywood (Calif.) Presbyterian Hospital. Since then, illness has put her in a hospital quite often in the last 10 years, she said. Mrs. Beaver's concern is her life in this era when most are worried about who hits the moon first, when will the recession end, can I buy that new car or will the price of coffee go up again? She is alert and loves to read, but must use a magnifying glass. She is immaculately dressed, well-groomed and loves to meet people, yet the strain of walking up and down the front steps of her home restricts her to a "breath of fresh air" in the morning. What keeps her going. And why? "I learned the tranquility of death," she said, recalling the old man who died, his head cradled in her arms. "To look at his face . . . to see the smile, the peace. "It gave me assurance there is no death; it's just passing into another room of your father's house." Mrs. Beaver finds joy in each day. There's the shell collection of her second husband, 89, whom she married in 1950. There's little, 10-year-old Lizzie Felts, a neighbor's girl from Caracas who visits the 80-year-old woman each day. "I don't feel sorry for myself," Mrs. Beaver said, Carressing the soft, black fur of her tiny French poodle, Pierre. "There is nothing that comes into your life that is too tough for you to rise above if you have the determination and the courage. "So I try to do something good for someone each day. And I've learned to laugh at myself." Pierre, a puppy, leaped from her arms to the floor. She folded her hands in her lap. "I feel grateful for each day," she said. "Every morning when I open my eyes, I thank God for another day." MRS. BEAVER & 'PIERRE'
