Riviera School to Expand

SKETCH SHOWS HOW RIVIERA ADDITION WILL UNITE TWO WINGS Riviera Day School, a private institution with about 200 students, will add two more grades this fall along with a two-story addition. The addition, expected to cost in excess of $60,000, was due for bids yesterday (Wednesday). Work is expected to start shortly with occupancy around the first of the year, Gableite Walter Klements is architect. The school is located at 6800 Nervia St. The two-story addition will fit between its two existing wings, now connected by a wall. Of Colonial design, the addition will be of cinderblock construction. First floor will include a kitchen and shower and locker-room for the pool. The second floor will provide four class-rooms which can be converted into an auditorium. The seventh and eighth grades are being added this fall. Mr. and Mrs. Lorin Coppock Jr. are owners of the school and have operated it here since 1950. She formerly was in public school work and he was for many years dean of boys at Miami High School.

McNayr Asks Patience on Metro In Second Appearance Here

County Manager Irving McNayr told Coral Gables Rotarians last week that Dade Countians are "going to really be in the soup if we don't vote reassessment out." McNayr addressed the Rotary Club at its weekly luncheon at the Coral Gables Country Club, five days before the Aug. 15 balloting on reassessment. He spoke two weeks ago to the Lions Club here. "I believe in this form of government," McNayr said. "I know it will work. I have seen it work. "But only if the people will work with it . . . if the people won't expect miracles, but if the people will come up with constructive criticisms, not destructive." McNayr's talk branched into two areas: the people must try to understand Metro and Metro must try to understand the people. McNayr said people must realize Metro is not trying to destroy the cities, as its critics often charge, but wants to give "the best possible service at the lowest possible cost." McNayr said many people become irate when they must appear in court on a traffic violation. But there's a good reason behind the law, said McNayr. The county manager said traffic violators cause property damage mounting to millions of dollars. A day in court might convince them of the severity of their actions, he said. But Metro must also understand the people and realize they want to be fully informed of any changes planned in their way of life, McNayr said. It would be right, said McNayr, if Metro offered the people a "time table," telling when and why certain changes must be made in the government, such as reassessment. Following his talk, McNayr answered questions from the floor. COUNTY MANAGER McNayr talks here as Metro Commissioner Winston Wynne of Coral Gables sits at left.

Life Around the Gables

THE GABLES is a lovely, exotic place. It's even a pleasure for a mailman to deliver the mail here. Like Joseph D. Shimkus, who just made one of his 333 stops in the Riviera section. Shimkus, 5752 SW 2nd St., delivered 2,000 letters (average is 1,100) and 500 magazines. (Staff photo by Raymond Lang)
