At Hospital Doc Mitchell Has His Final Delivery-- It's Named for Him

DR. MITCHELL A man who spent many hours delivering hundreds of babies had a "delivery" of his own this week. He is Dr. George A. Mitchell, who died in March of lung cancer at the age of 50. Friends and acquaintances of Dr. Mitchell gathered at Doctors' Hospital Tuesday night to pay tribute to the hard working, hard-playing obstetrician and gynecologist. They named a new delivery suite after him. A fellow doctor Dr. C. H. McDevitt Jr., did the honors for his old friend by presiding at the ceremonies. The Rev. Fred E. Cole, minister of the Coral Gables Congregational Church, delivered the prayer of dedication and the benediction. Besides his practice, Dr. Mitchell will be remembered for his love of golf and horse races. And for his 30-acre mango plantation at Sunset and Galiano. Twice or more a week the Osceola, Mo., native would saunter down to the race track in the hopes that his big daily double would come in. But it proved evasive and it never took the place of the long hours he had to put in at his work. His practice was said to be one of the largest in Dade County. Dr. Mitchell was co-founder of Doctors' Hospital, immediate past president of the medical staff there and a director of the John T. Macdonald Foundation, which owns and operates the hospital. "George, or 'Mitch,' as he was known to his friends and colleagues, was honest, easy going, gracious, hard working and more than willing to advance his knowledge to his fellow man," said Dr. McDevitt. "He had a great desire to enjoy life, was a wonderful father, and most of all, he is going to be missed by everyone who knew him." "With his death, the profession, the various associations and the community have lost a great member, a great man and a wonderful friend," Dr. McDevitt said of Dr. Mitchell.

Court Hears Vic Polk's Pool Case

An area pool builder ran afoul the Coral Gables Building Department and wound up in Municipal Court Tuesday. Victor Henry Polk, 52, of 9001 SW 65th Ct., had a decision on his case postponed to Sept. 5 by Judge Charles Spooner after Polk asked for time to make the necessary changes. Polk had been charged by City Plumbing Inspector C. Frank Shaw with proceeding with work on a pool at 422 Rosaro Ave. after a stop-work order had been issued; installing non-metallic pipe; and covering a swimming pool installation before inspection, testing and approval.
