Nearly 10,000 Students Enroll

Tuesday was "S" Day and 9,444 youngsters trooped back to Coral Gables 10 schools, leaving officials mopping their brows and remarking "they all seem happy and healthy but we're darn tired." Registration and enrollment figures were generally as anticipated with slight adjustments to be made in some grade levels. Coral Gables Sr. High School reported a registration of over 3,000 and a first-day attendance of 2,868 students. They expected a large sophomore class and got one. Aside from that all is progressing normally with the usual rush of schedule changes and guidance conferences. Coral Gables Elementary got 758 pupils which was a "little bit more" than they expected. The 1st and 5th grades were heavy but other lighter classes provided a balance. Merrick Demonstration School enrolled 475 and is anticipating 30 more late students, with "no overcrowding at all." West Laboratory School was a little short of expected enrollment with 358 in grades 1 through 6 and 49 enrolled in kindergarten classes. Ponce de Leon Junior High School had an attendance of 1,716. Their grades were all about even. Riviera Day School reported that they had about 200, their usual capacity, although grades 3 and 6 were heavy and grade 5 was light. Deerborne School has a 250 fixed enrollment. "We have all we can handle and we're glad we don't have any less," officials remarked. St. Theresa's Catholic School says their enrollment is "always more" than they anticipate. They have 1,400 students and grade 3 is filled to capacity and none of the others are light. George Washington Carver Junior High reported that 542 came to class Tuesday and that grades 5 and 6 are heavy, while 2nd grade is light. 1st grade is as expected. Carver Senior High had an enrollment of 877 which is about what they anticipated. None of the schools reported any serious problems of overcrowding although in some cases television classes and early classes are helping to avoid that situation. All reported that they did not feel that these figures would be final as many families are late in returning from vacations and other children were absent for various reasons. Most of the schools will continue to enroll throughout the school year, although they certainly got the bulk of the load today. More than once they commented that "if only the problem of late registration could be solved, our worries would be lessened considerably." Even if the student cannot report to class on the opening day, it would help, they feel, if more students would cooperate in registering before the first day.

Arrests Drop In Gables

Continued from Page 1 the conviction in Metro Court. But his letter indicates dissatisfaction. Here is the text of Kimbrough's reply to Judge Turner: "Your letter arrived while I was on vacation, so hence the delayed account of my understanding of the situation of which you wrote. "Within the jurisdiction of the City of Coral Gables, due to the ruling of City Attorney Edward L. Semple, early in 1961, on "false arrest," the police officer now is forbidden to write a traffic ticket on an accident unless he is an eye witness. This, I know, is the only concrete reason for a drop in issuing tickets. "However, it would stand to reason that if the Metro motorcycle officers, are servicing this city as has been explained to the City Manager and myself, there would be fewer violations on the man in the car to note. I have no idea of how many tickets are served by Metro policemen. "And lastly, without wishing to appear critical, it would be interesting to examine the dispositions of the cases that have come before the Metro Courts, say within the last six months. How many cases before the bench were found not guilty, case dismissed, suspended, or nolle pros (sic)? The decisions of the judges affect the morale of the man on the beat, just as the news articles on the number of unpaid tickets cause resentment from the honorable citizen. "I appreciate your writing me. When some more specific reasons should come to my attention, I'll keep you informed, for I realize that I have devied mostly in opinions. "I, too, wish to remain, Cordially yours, W. G. Kimbrough.
