Poet's Old Shoes To Fill a Need

A Coral Gables beauty spot, Cartagenza Plaza, is to be further embellished by placing there a replica of the huge bronze shoes which constitute a famous landmark of the community's sister-city, Cartagena, Colombia. The Board of Directors of the Coral Gables People-to-People Program has authorized Clayton Henry Charles, Chairman of the Art Department at University of Miami, to cast the shoes in concrete in a somewhat reduced scale in keeping with the size of the Plaza. The replica will be about four feet long and surfaced with a fine-grained, terrazzo-like cement with a color and texture closely approximating that of the original statue. The unusual monumental subject was inspired by a celebrated Cartagena poet, Luis Carlos Lopez. In nostalgic verse recalling the city's romantic past, the poet concludes wryly of the present: "Yet, with your sad and neglected aspect, you can still inspire the sort of affection one feels for his comfortable old shoes." Cartagena Plaza, at Le Jeune Road and Sunset Drive, was so named as part of an exchange of courtesies under the People-to-People program. A park in Cartagena has been named Coral Gables Plaza and was ceremoniously dedicated when fifty Gabeltes visited that city last fall.

According to the Committee [?of?] One Million, it will be a new resident who moves here sometime between Sept. 1 and Oct. 19, and who, in a written contest, best convinces a panel of judges of his or her reasons for becoming a resident of the county. The winner of the contest will receive a free vacation for two to Nassau on the Bahama Star, free use of a Hertz Cadillac for one week, free groceries, plus many other gifts and prizes. The name of the winner will be announced Friday, Oct. 20. To enter the contest, a new resident of any age, who moves into the area between Sept. 1 and Oct. 19 should complete the following statement in 100 words or less: "I became a resident of Dade County because..." Those entering should submit name, address, age, occupation, where from, where employed, number and ages of persons in family and a picture of the family. All entries should be sent to the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, 345 NE Second Ave., and must be received by 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19. The "Committee of One Million," with all residents of Dade County serving as honorary members, is headed by an executive group made up of Miami City Manager M. L. Reese, Assistant County Manager Hoke Welch, Miami Publicity Director Lew Price, Miami Beach Publicity Consultant Hank Meyer and Fred Canel, executive director of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce. Everett Clay, public relations executive, is chairman. The millionth resident arrival time was estimated by a group of statisticians from the Chamber of Commerce, the Metro Planning Department and the U.S. Census Bureau. Exact time cannot be pinpointed but they have agreed that it will take place during this period.
