League of Pen Women Search For Writers

There's a contest for writers. Categories are adult fiction, juvenile fiction, non-fiction, music and poetry. Deadline is Oct. 2 and all works must never have been published. Sponsor is the Coral Gables Branch of the National League of the American Pen Women. Each poetry entry must be accompanied by a 50-cent fee and $1 for entries in the other categories. First, second and third place cash prizes will be taken from the accumulated fees in each particular category. Winners will be announced during the South Atlantic Regional Conference Oct. 27-28. Host club will be the Coral Gables branch. Rules are, adult fiction, 2500 word maximum; juvenile fiction, 1200 word maximum; non-fiction (an article, feature or profile) 2000 word maximum. Music has two categories: song and instrumental. Poetry, also, has two: light verse, 16 lines or less, and serious verse, 20 lines or less. Four-Inch Pancakes

If you like pancakes, or just have a sense of adventure when it comes to food, there's a new restaurant in Coral Gables you ought to try. The new M & M Pancake House, located at 866 Ponce de Leon Blvd., offers 20 different kinds of pancakes, including a German Apple pancake which measures about 12 inches in diameter and four inches high. They also feature a variety of preserves and syrups. The Pancake House is owned and operated by Bickford, Inc., of New York, which also owns Miami's five M & M Cafeterias. This is their first venture into the pancake business. And so far they've spent about $250,000 for it. They have employed about 50 people to cook and serve your pancakes.

Steer's Takes Over Daddy's Old Location

Steer's Restaurant now occupies the former site of Daddy's Restaurant, 329 Miracle Mile. The room has been recently renovated and redecorated. Easily spotted because of its crimson canopy, Steer's features steaks, N. Y. choice, at moderate prices. Owners are Marty Katz, Max Bogner, and Abe Berkowitz, Katz is the former owner of Moretti's Restaurant in Rockefeller Center, N.Y., and the Fifth Avenue Restaurant in Manhattan. Max Bogner is also a New Yorker. He is part owner of Glorified Delicatessen in Miami and operates the dining room at the Traveler's Hotel on NW 36th St. Abe Berkowitz came to Miami from Brooklyn 11 years ago. He also is formerly associated with Glorified Delicatessen and is presently associated with the Traveler's Hotel. Customers will remember Betty Jo Westberg, hostess-manager. She was hostess-manager at Daddy's.

Pied Piper Visits Studio M 3 Times

Pied Piper Playhouse will present three major children's theater productions at Studio "M" this coming season. Opening the second week in October, will be "King Midas and the Golden Touch." At Christmas time the entire theater will be turned over to the production of "Peter Pan" and in the spring "Prince and the Pauper," all original Pied Piper adaptations. Season subscriptions of $2.25 for the three plays are now being accepted by the box office.
