School Overcrowding Not Seen Problem On Opening Tuesday

Good news for most Coral Gables students going to school Tuesday — no serious overcrowding is anticipated. Prospects are for slightly larger classes in most cases, but no double sessions and no real problems. The city's seven public schools are scheduled to open Tuesday for the 1961-62 school year. Deerborne School, a private school, will open on the same date, but Riviera Day School is scheduled to open until Sept. 11. ONE PAROCHIAL St. Theresa's Catholic School, the city's only parochial school, will open Monday for grades 6-8, Tuesday for grades 3-5 and Wednesday for kindergarten, first and second grades. Orientation at the University of Miami begins Sept. 10 and classes on Sept. 18. The university expects an enrollment about the same as last year's record setting 14,102. This included 9,746 day and 4,978 evening students. Most serious problems will occur at the city's two high schools, Coral Gables High and George Washington Carver, the Negro high school. GABLES HIGH EXPANDS Registrations, which had been anticipated to reach 3,000 at Gables High, have already passed that figure and more are expected. No double sessions, will be necessary, however, but some early classes are scheduled and the school has resorted to television classrooms holding 300 students. Friday is the deadline for registration at Gables High. Those registering late will be set back two days in starting school. Portable classrooms acquired last year will help relieve the overcrowding problem at Carver High. Officials there anticipate an increase of more than 100 from 969 to 1,085. TWO WEEKS Registration will continue through the second week in September with no delays incurred. No information was available on registration figures at St. Theresa's. Riviera Day School, which plans to expand, is operating at capacity — slightly more than 200 students. Registrations are taken anytime. Deerborne School's regular registration deadline is Friday, but students are permitted to register anytime during the (See School's, page 2)

They'll Ask Us Our Ideas

What does Coral Gables need and how would we go about paying for it? This will be the subject of one of the most comprehensive studies ever conducted here when the Jaycees launch a survey Sept. 9. "This will be no amateur survey," Larry Adams, who is helping sparkplug the study, said this week. The Jaycees' efforts are aimed at making government aware of the needs of the community and the community (See Survey, page 2)

Club to Close

The Coral Gables Country Club will be closed Tuesday while repairs are under way. Kiwanis Club members will meet at the Elks Lodge on Giralda Ave.

Meter Girls' Case On Trial Tonight

By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter Two parking meter girls, fired five months ago on charges of falsifying parking tickets, will ask the city to reinstate them tonight (Thursday) in a trial before the Trial Board. Scheduled to have their side of the parking ticket controversy heard are Shirley Searle, 9740 SW 73rd St., and Norweida Barrow, 4601 NW Fifth St., three and one-half year employes of the city. The trial will be held in the City Commission Room on the second floor of City Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. WERE TRANSFERRED The meter checkers, who were policewomen before being transferred to the Finance Department shortly before dismissal, will be represented by Attorney William Pruitt. Pruitt defended Tax Assessor T. C. Blount in 1954 when City Manager William McIlwain attempted to fire him. The City's big guns will be City Attorney Ted Semple and Assistant City Attorney William Burton. A five-man board, led by Chairman Andrew T. Healy, will decide the merits of the dismissal charges against Mrs. Searle, wife of a Miami police officer, and Miss Barrow. Other members are John B. Kenna, Dr. Roy T. Bovard, William H. May and J. Cleve Allen. FIRED MARCH 27 The girls were fired by City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. on March 27 after they reportedly refused to answer questions about the alleged discrepencies during an investigation conducted by Finance Director Kenneth Allyn. The city claims that the fired meter checkers either failed to indicate overtime violation times or indicated the (See Meter, page 2)

Fees Are Increased Business Costs Raised Some Are Unchanged In Price

By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter The cost of doing business in Coral Gables has gone up for a variety of enterprises. The City Commission has approved a new list of license fees which will more than double the old fee in some instances and produce an estimated $30,000-$40,000 in added revenue to the City. Biggest jump went to exterminators who went from $30 to $75, insurance companies, from $50 to $125 and real estate brokers, $30 to $60. Actually the process began back in 1958 when the then City Commission asked the Finance Department to study the fees with an eye to providing more revenue for the city. "The Commission was looking for extra revenue at the time," Tax Collector T. H. (See Feet, page 2)
