Younger Set Did the Hully Gully

By BECKY DOYLE-QUINN Times Reporter It was Saturday night and the Country Club set went native. Bermuda-clad members and guests of the Coral Gables Country Club gathered for dinner and dancing under artificial palms but a genuine full moon. The theme of this year's Isla Fiesta party was the Caribbean islands. A large papier-mache native rocked in a hammock hung between two man-made palms in the middle of the dining room. He watched the younger set steal the show dancing the "Hully Gully" to Crusty Drybread's Calypso Band. Later the younger set stared in amazement as 70-year-old Charles Wolfes won a special prize for "Effort Above and Beyond the Call of Duty" in the Limbo contest. The Limbo is a strenuous game in which, to the rhythm of native drums, one works his way, knees first and head back, under a bar which gets lower and lower every round. "It's not a dance — it's an acrobatic feat," commented a dance instructor. Other winners in the Limbo contest were Micky Clough, first place in the boys' division; Barbara Noyer, first prize for the girls and Sarah Chandler, second prize for the girls. Over 1,000 people jammed the club for the evening. Over 700 of these had dinner, a buffet of roast beef and broiled crawfish. Continuous entertainment was provided by the club's regular band, Ginger Johnson's, and was supplemented by Crusty Drybread. The committee for this year's party was chairman, Mrs. Wendell Thagard; Terry Campbell and Leonard Lewman, who designed the decorations. Barbara Binns; Mr. and Mrs. Sam L. Cook; Dr. and Mrs. J. N. Adams; Mr. and Mrs. Homer Townsend; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gobats. For years, Joan and Bob Farrell have worked on this particular affair. They moved to St. Petersburg recently but made a trip back to help plan and work on the event. Plans are already being made for next year's affair. The energetic committee members enjoyed this one so much they've already signed up to work on it again next year, the club reports. ALL DRESSED up and plenty of places to go, these couples were at the Coral Gables Country Club party Saturday night. Left to right are Mr. and Mrs. Bill Byrd and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kinnin.
