Peware of Home-Grown Isms
We must not allow ideologies that will destroy us to fester in the Americas, a top official of the Organization of American States told Coral Gables Rotarians last Friday. Marcus Kohly, director of the national office of the OAS, said Americans must preserve the democratic way of life in the Americas at a time when Communism is bent on bringing the whole Western Hemisphere into its own orbit. "We worry about Berlin, which is right," the former Cuban diplomat said, "but we have something to worry about right here on our own shores... ARE TRUSTEES "We have a responsibility to ourselves and to our children. We are the trustees of a heritage. "We must not only enjoy and appreciate it, but try to preserve it for posterity for our children and their children." Economic cooperation in the Americas, as outlined in President Kennedy's Alliance for Progress, is one good way to slam the door shut on Communism, Kohly said. Kohly, born in Havana and once a Cuban ambassador to several South and Central American countries, said communism has "a glittering appeal" to the ignorant and the hungry. It is to these people the Communists "offer and promise what they know they can't deliver, but it has appeal," Kohly said.
