Map Leads City To Court
A group of defendants has asked the Federal Court to toss out a suit by a former Gableite and map guide publisher charging infringement of his copyrighted maps. The suit was filed in Federal District Court Aug. 8 by W. L. Larson, who once published the "Self-Guided Tour" maps put out by the City and Chamber of Commerce. Defendants are the City; the Chamber; John Giffen, current publisher of the guide maps; and Parker Printing, 303 Alcazar Ave., printers of the maps. 'LAST DITCH' Larson said that he resorted to the suit as a last ditch measure then he could not get satisfaction from any of the parties involved in the dispute. The dispute dates back to when Ed Baumel was Chamber of Commerce manager. Lee Smith, who took over the Chamber recently, said that Larson's claim is based on the fact that his map was once used in connection with the "Self-Guided Tour" — a Chamber project for which a number of people take credit. NEW MAP Last year, Giffen came up with a different map and deal for the Chamber, which is subsidized by the City to handle the map project. The Chamber bought it. "We feel that the plaintiff has no basis for the suit," said Smith. Larson said that the Self-Guided Tour is not the basis for the suit, but what he said are infringements on a map and presentation on which he said he has copyright claims. A battery of legal talent will defend the suit. Owen Freed and Edmund Russo will handle the Chamber's interest; Ted Semple and William Burton, the City's; and Ed Marcus will represent Parker Printing and Giffen. Pruitt and Pruitt will present Larson's claim to the Federal Court.
