CG Sales Clinic to Stress Oomph; First Is Sept. 20

Two hundred-fifty sales-people are expected to enroll in a sales clinic to be conducted for four Wednesday mornings in September and October here. The sessions will be held in the Miracle Theater and last for one hour. Registrants — the course is $2.50 for the entire four meetings — will get a how-to-merchandise course from some master merchandisers. The clinic, whose chairman is Sam Miller, is being sponsored by the Retail Merchants Division of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. The dates are Wednesdays, Sept. 20, 27, Oct. 4 and 11. Working with the Buyer-Seller Committee of the Rotary Club, the clinic conductors will stage a Courtesy Contest to run concurrently. Here's how it will work: Each week during the four weeks, an employe will be selected as the top in courtesy, service and sales approach and will be given a $50 savings bond. The customer recommending him will receive a $25 bond. Customers will make their nominations on a courtesy coupon to be dropped in a box in Gables stores. Says Miller of the clinic itself: "Our purpose is to re-emphasize the basic fundamental plans of selling merchandise and being courteous, obliging and friendly. "Our aim is to have every business concern in Coral Gables, whether they belong to the Chamber of Commerce or not, participate in this program, which is designed to bring about realization on the part of customers in our area that Coral Gables is the place to shop." Coffee and doughnuts will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 7:55 each Wednesday preceding the meeting. A schedule of topics and dates will be included in the Times next month.

Sears' Sam Miller New President of Merchants

Sam Miller, who rose from a paint salesman to a general store manager in the Sears and Roebuck Co., was elected President of the Retail Merchants Association Aug. 24. Miller, who heads the Coral Gables branch of Sears, fills the position vacated by Al Friedman, who resigned unexpectedly, for personal reasons. Miller, on the board of directors before being elected president, said he would first study the association's past programs and would then add to those "any worthwhile projects" the group believed vital to the business area. The Alabamian emphasized that Miracle Mile, Ponce de Leon Boulevard and other main shopping arteries in the Gables are superb in that they compose a miniature "shopping center." Miller said it is important, therefore, Gables' businesses "create a customer's following." He suggested such a following be built up by salespeople who are not only courteous, but who have an excellent knowledge of the merchandise they are trying to sell. Miller's first job with Sears and Roebuck in 1936 was that of a paint salesman. Soon promoted, he worked for the company's chain stores throughout the South. He became general manager of the local branch in 1954, when the store opened. Miller was graduated in management from the University of Alabama and was a sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps in the U.S. Army during World War II. Miller, and his wife, Florene, live at 7500 SW 74th Ct. They have three grown daughters, Mary Ann, Anita and Georgine.
