Hammock Oaks All Set Except For Zoning

Sol Rovin's Hammock Oaks subdivision is all set to go—with the exception of the requested apartment zoning changes, City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said. Rovin and the city have reached agreement on posting a $230,000 bond and other construction procedure agreements, Robinson said. The land is located just below Fairchild Gardens and to the east of old Cutler Road. But Rovin must still clear the hurdles on his proposal to build apartments on sites originally set aside for home construction. These are located near the controversial canal which had once been set to connect two lagoons to link waterfront property to the bay. The canal now ends at the salt water line and a three-hundred-foot land barrier separates it from the lagoons. Both the Zoning Board and City commission must rule on Rovin's apartment request, which is opposed by a group of homeowners living in the area.

It's Going To Be Easy To Spot School Busses

To make identification of school buses easier, Coral Gables Transportation Director Lee Davis is shifting location of the "school bus" signs from bumper level to eye level on the rear of all buses used for this purpose. In addition, he is adding a "school bus" sign to the front of each vehicle. Fronts were not so identified last year. As still another safety measure, the running lights of the school buses will be turned on when they are carrying children. "We want to make it impossible for motorists to avoid positive recognition of our school buses," Davis said. State law prohibits the passing of a school bus by other vehicles when it is taking on or discharging its passengers. Coral Gables school buses are regular equipment of the city's transportation system, diverted to school bus use on a part-time basis. Thus it is not practical to deck them in the bright yellow color which instantly identifies school buses which need not double up on regular bus runs.
