Young Strassburg Heard The Sound of Music

Paul M. Strassburg, 516 Perugia Ave., "had the best summer I've ever had — studying music." Paul, the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Strassburg, was one of 98 scholarship winners, the only one from Florida, who attended the "Congress of Strings" at Michigan State University this summer. Active in local music groups, Paul is past president of the All-Miami Youth Symphony Orchestra, a member and librarian of the Hillel Symphonetta, played first chair violin for the Coral Gables High School Orchestra, and won first chair in the All-State Orchestra Contest. He won his summer scholarship through an audition for the American Federation of Musicians Miami local chapter. "They really kept us pretty busy. We would start the day with two rehearsals consisting of one-and-a-half hours of playing 'Music of the Great Masters,' and then in the afternoon I either had a lesson or a seminar with my teacher. "And in between that you're supposed to put in about five hours of practice." Paul's teacher was William Lincer, solo violist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. "We had a recreation room below the dorms—coed dorms, by the way," so it wasn't all work and no play. All his expenses were paid but Paul "managed to spend $80" — some of it on social life. Paul thought his greatest experience in the eight weeks he spent at Michigan, "probably one of the most beautifully landscaped and well-equipped universities in the country," was playing Verdi "Requiem" under conductor Robert Shaw. "I'm very grateful to the Musicians' Union for the opportunity," said Paul, "I really enjoyed it." The purpose of the Congress is to replenish strings in the major symphony orchestras, but Paul may not be one of the ones they get. Although his whole family is musically inclined, Paul leans more toward a major in business administration or economics at the University of Miami, where he has been granted a partial scholarship. Paul's father, Robert Strassburg, a UM faculty member, is a composer and conductor. He directs the All-Miami Youth Symphony and the Hillel Symphonetta too. PAUL M. STRASSBURG
