Commissioners Hold Off Reopening Campus Canteen
A proposal to reopen the Campus Canteen under new management and ownership got a cool reception from the Coral Gables City Commission last week. The Commission deferred taking final action on the transfer request of Ott Enterprises from D. B. Billips and D. L. Uhlenhopp. At the same time they instructed Acting City Attorney William Burton to proceed with action in revocation of the Campus Canteen license. Billups was fined $250 May 20, 1959 for screening his windows. Burton indicated that the appeal had been given up and the way was now clear for the City to revoke the license. The Commission's action apparently caught attorney Henry Amoon off guard. Amoon, a former beverage agent, indicated he did not know of the impending action. But Amoon insisted the new owners would run a legal place. "I raided that place several times myself in the past," the beverage agent-turned attorney told the Commission. Amoon was told to bring in the new owners so they could question them about their proposed operation.
Siegal Appointed Director of Judea
Sidney Siegel, veteran Miami fund raising and public relations executive, has been appointed executive director of Temple Judea in Coral Gables. Siegel served until this month as Southeastern regional director of the Jewish Theological Seminary of the America. He is former assitant director of development of Mt. Sinai Hospital at Miami Beach. Ben Essen, Temple president, said Siegel's appointment coincides with the beginning of an intensive expansion program by Temple Judea, oldest congregation in the Coral Gables and South Dade area, with a membership of more than 300 families. Before moving here, Siegel was assistant executive director of the 1,000-bed Brooklyn Hebrew Home and Hospital for the Aged. He was an administrative officer at several Veterans Administration hospitals, following service during World War II. Married to the former Fay Cornsweet, he has two sons Stuart, 18, and Dennis 13.
